How Van Wert County began

Van Wert County was formed out of Indian land in the Great Black Swamp country of northwestern Ohio -- the Ohio General Assembly's act is dated April 1, 1820 by the county's own 1906 history, though modern secondary sources give February 12, 1820 -- but it was not organized for government until 1835, once settlement was substantial enough to support it. It was named for Isaac Van Wart, one of three New York militiamen who captured British Major John Andre in 1780, exposing Benedict Arnold's treason; the man himself never set foot in Ohio. The seat, the city of Van Wert, was platted in stages between 1835 and 1837 on land donated to the county by James Watson Riley (son of the shipwrecked mariner Capt. James Riley, who had founded the county's first settlement at Willshire in 1822) and his partners. The county remained mostly swamp and forest, crossed by the old Wyandot trail from Upper Sandusky to Fort Wayne, until systematic ditching after the Civil War opened its rich black soil to farming, and it is still known today chiefly as a farm-market county.

Van Wert has been the county seat since the county organized in 1835, though Willshire briefly served as the temporary seat while the town of Van Wert was being laid out. The site was donated to the county by the founding proprietors -- James Watson Riley (son of Capt. James Riley), Peter Aughenbaugh and George Marsh -- who deeded the county all odd-numbered lots from the original plat in exchange for the county seat being fixed there, a bargain formalized in a deed executed at St. Marys on April 12, 1838.
