How Elgin began
Elgin's history begins with York Township's organization; Jonathan VanEman made the first land purchase within the future village in 1835. The settlement was first known as Yorktown -- church services were held in a log schoolhouse by 1859 -- but a duplicate Yorktown post office elsewhere forced a rename to Elgin. The village platted its first lots in 1883, the year the Chicago and Atlantic Railroad reached it, and incorporated in 1897; an oil boom soon after briefly swelled it to 200-300 residents and gave it three hotels, three saloons and a dance hall. It was also home to a number of the Welsh Civil War volunteers documented in the county's 1906 history of neighboring Venedocia. It has declined from 208 residents in 1900 to 49 in 2020, one of the smallest incorporated places in the county.
Settled 1835 (Jonathan VanEman, first land purchase), platted 1883, incorporated 1897, by Jonathan VanEman (first land purchase); platted and incorporated by unnamed later petitioners.
Where the name comes from
The settlement was first called Yorktown, after York Township, with church services held in a log schoolhouse by 1859 under that name. Because another Ohio post office was already named Yorktown, the community had to adopt a different name for its own post office, and chose Elgin; the Van Wert County Historical Society's account does not give the exact year of the change or explain why 'Elgin' specifically was chosen.
Before the town
No Native village, mound or treaty site specific to Elgin was located in the sources consulted. A historical marker for General Anthony Wayne's 1794 march covers nearby Venedocia and the county's eastern third generally, but does not name Elgin specifically.
Timeline
- — Jonathan VanEman makes the first land purchase within what becomes the village of Elgin.
- — Church services are held in the settlement's log schoolhouse under the name Yorktown, before a duplicate post office elsewhere forces the community to rename itself Elgin.
- — Welsh residents of Elgin, including James Thomas, Richard T. Hughes, William J. Hughes (father of Hon. W. T. Hughes) and Lucius Price, serve in the Union Army during the Civil War, documented alongside their Venedocia neighbors in the county's 1906 history.
- — The first plat of the village is recorded, the same year the Chicago and Atlantic Railroad passes through Elgin, with a depot built on the north side of the tracks on Main Street's west side.
- — Elgin's incorporation is recorded; around the same time the village establishes its own school system, separate from York Township, and builds a two-room village school.
- — Elgin's population, swollen by an oil boom to between 200 and 300 residents in the years just after incorporation, is recorded at 208.
- — Elgin's schools rejoin the York Township system, likely because enrollment was declining as the oil boom ran out.
- — The village passes an ordinance to suppress disorderly houses and regulate the sale of beer, ale and porter, a direct response to the three hotels, three saloons and a dance hall that had sprung up during the oil boom.
- — Population stands at 126, already well down from the 1900 figure.
- — The Elgin Service Center opens, providing farmers with on-farm grain storage and handling equipment before later expanding into pole-building construction.
- — Elgin's postmaster, Betty Jane Mottinger -- the village's eighteenth -- is killed, and the case draws national attention.
- — The U.S. Census records 49 residents in Elgin, a 78 percent decline from 1900.
Stories
Two Yorktowns cannot share a post office
Elgin did not start life under its own name. As church services gathered in the settlement's log schoolhouse by 1859, the community was known as Yorktown, a plain enough name for a village organized inside York Township. The trouble was that Ohio already had another post office of that name, and the postal service could not run two Yorktowns at once. The village had to pick something else, and it picked Elgin -- no source we found explains why that particular name was chosen over any other, only that the change was a practical necessity rather than a tribute or a family name. It is a small, ordinary piece of 19th-century postal housekeeping, but it is the only recorded reason Elgin is called Elgin at all.
Three hotels, three saloons, and an ordinance to rein them in
For a few years around the turn of the 20th century, Elgin was not the quiet farm village its 2020 population of 49 might suggest. An oil boom that followed the village's 1897 incorporation drew 200 to 300 residents into a place built to hold far fewer, and the businesses that sprang up to serve them were not all churches and general stores: the county historical society's own account records three hotels, three saloons and a dance hall doing a brisk trade in a village that a few decades earlier had held Sunday services in a log schoolhouse. The boom towns' usual problems followed. In 1912 the village council passed an ordinance aimed squarely at what it called 'disorderly houses of ill fame' and 'lewd and lascivious behavior in the streets,' alongside rules regulating the sale of beer, ale and porter -- a plain record of a small Ohio village trying to govern the rowdier side of its own brief prosperity before the oil ran out and enrollment, businesses and population all began to fall back down together.

Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
