How Windsor Township, Ashtabula County began

Windsor Township's first house went up in 1799, built by George Phelps on the creek that still carries his name; Judge Solomon Griswold followed in 1800 with his family of six children and became the township's most influential early figure, hosting its 1811 organizing meeting at his own house after it was detached from Middlefield Township. Settlers found an old stone fortification near Windsor Mills overlooking the Grand River, and Native people continued returning to camp in the area each fall for years after settlement began. The township's most memorable early landmark was a plain, warm-weather-only Episcopal meeting house built in 1816 and nicknamed "Solomon's Temple" after Griswold's generosity in building it; today the township is known for the Wiswell Road Covered Bridge and Windsor Mills' sandstone quarry.

Settled 1799 (George Phelps, first settler), incorporated 1811 (organized, detached from Middlefield Township), by George Phelps, first settler; Solomon Griswold, leading early organizer.

Where the name comes from

No source consulted gives an explicit origin for the name Windsor, though the Western Reserve's townships were commonly named for Connecticut and New England towns their settlers came from; Windsor, Connecticut is one of the oldest towns in that state. Windsor is not the only township of that name in Ohio.

Before the town

Early settlers found an old Native fortification near Windsor Mills, described as a double stone fortification positioned to overlook the Grand River -- a defensive site whose builders and date are not identified in the source. More strikingly, the 1924 township history records that Native people did not simply vanish ahead of settlement here: "for a long time they came back in large numbers every fall and pitched their camps," returning seasonally to the area well after Euro-American families had settled it. No nation is named for either the fortification or the seasonal camps in the source consulted.

  • Seasonal fall camps (camp) — Windsor Township, location not specified, continuing seasonally after settlement began, early 1800s (conneautohio.us)

Stories

Solomon's Temple

By 1816, Windsor Township's Episcopalian families needed a place to gather, so they put up a meeting house across the road from the Griswold family home -- simple in the extreme, with a puncheon-log floor and plain benches, and usable only in warm weather since it had no way to be heated. Its construction leaned heavily on the generosity of Judge Solomon Griswold, who had arrived in the township in 1800 with six children and become, by the time the church went up, its most prominent citizen: he had hosted the township's very first organizing meeting at his own house in 1811. In gratitude, or perhaps in gentle local humor, residents took to calling the little building "Solomon's Temple," a nickname that stuck in local memory long after the structure itself was gone. It served double duty as both a house of worship and a schoolroom for secular instruction -- one modest building doing the work that, in a larger town, might have needed two or three.
