How Orwell began
Orwell village grew up as the commercial center of Orwell Township, itself the first Western Reserve township drawn in the Connecticut Land Company's 1798 lottery. A post office named Orwell, after Orwell, Vermont, the home of an early settler, opened in 1826, the same year the township organized under that name. The village's best-preserved landmark is the Old Brick, a brick house whose earliest cornerstone is dated 1821 but which was not completed until 1849; Allenston Spaulding began the property in 1830, and Ezra and Fanny Pratt bought it in 1834, holding it as a working farm of about 1,200 acres employing as many as 50 people before their family donated the building to the Old Brick Historical Society in 1964. The village became a regional schooling center after Orwell Academy opened in 1851.
Where the name comes from
Orwell takes its name from Orwell, Vermont, the birthplace of an early settler in the township.
Before the town
No Native American village, trail, or site specific to Orwell village is documented in the sources consulted; the township's history records two named Native individuals, "Captain Phillips" and "Indian Joe," who remained in the area into the 1820s.

Stories
Two families, two hundred years
The Old Brick, standing today along Route 45 just north of the Grand Valley schools, is unusual for how few hands it passed through. Allenston Spaulding bought the land in 1830 and began building it, but sold to Ezra and Fanny Pratt in 1834, before the house was even finished -- construction dragged on until 1849, nearly two decades after a cornerstone was laid bearing the date 1821, evidently marking an even earlier start that stalled. Once complete, the property became a substantial working farm, growing to roughly 1,200 acres and, at its peak in the 1830s, employing as many as fifty people -- a scale that made it one of the township's major enterprises, not merely a farmhouse. It also served as Orwell's post office for a time, with the old post office desk still standing inside the building today. The Pratt family held onto the property for 130 years, from 1834 until 1964, when they donated it to the newly formed Old Brick Historical Society -- meaning that, as the society's own treasurer put it, only two families owned the place across two full centuries.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Orwell, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.
48,863 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
