How West Township, Columbiana County began
West Township, a full thirty-six-section township in the west of Columbiana County (township 6 north, range 5 east), is drained by the Mahoning and Sandy-Tuscarawas systems and sits on the watershed between them. Michael Sanor, a Revolutionary War soldier with eleven children, settled in 1804 with John Ruff, Henry King and David Smith. The 1879 and 1905 county histories date the township's organization 1816 and Wikipedia 1814. Its crossroads villages (New Alexander, platted about 1812; Chambersburg, 1828; East Rochester, 1834; Lynchburg, 1834; Bayard and Moultrie, 1852-53) grew along the stage road, the Sandy and Beaver Canal and the Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad, and the southwest corner holds part of Minerva.

Where the name comes from
No source we found explains the name; the 1905 history locates the township as 'township 6 north, range 5 east' and the 1879 history as 'No. 16 north, range 5 east,' and it lies in the western part of the county. Wikipedia notes only that it is the only West Township in Ohio.
Before the town
Wikipedia's West Township article carries a photo caption saying that the Great Trail, the old route linking the Forks of the Ohio with the Sandusky country, passed through this area; we did not read the marker's own inscription, and the county histories name no trail, village, mound or encounter in the township. The township was part of the lands opened to settlement by the Treaty of Greenville (1795); the 1905 history says pioneers began taking up land about 1803.

- — Michael Sanor, a Revolutionary War veteran with eleven children, settles in the north of the township in spring; John Ruff (section 3, thirteen children), Henry King (section 4) and David Smith (section 11, ten children) settle the same year.
- — John Hahn locates on section 8 on May 5 with a wife and no children, and then raises fourteen.
- — The only church building erected before 1820, a log church and schoolhouse for all public purposes, is built at New Alexander; it is torn down in 1840.

Stories
The hill where the water divides
The 1879 county history lists a natural curiosity of West Township, the watershed that separates the Mahoning and Tuscarawas rivers. On James Reed's farm several springs rise, the principal one in the cellar of his house, and the water runs east for nearly half a mile to Gimlet Hill, near Chambersburg. At the foot of the hill, the historian says, the stream splits: about half goes south to the Big Sandy, the Tuscarawas and the Muskingum and reaches the Ohio at Marietta, while the other half flows northeast past North Georgetown, Alliance and Warren, through Youngstown, to the Ohio near Beaver, Pennsylvania. The highest ground in the township lies around Chambersburg, in sections 9, 10, 15 and 16.
Lynchburg and the canal that did not last
Lynchburg, named for the Virginia city, was platted December 4, 1834 by the landowners Eli Wickersham and Amos Preston, with an addition that month by Preston, William Hall and Philip Wickersham. The county historians say it owed its existence to the Sandy and Beaver Canal, then under construction, and that its best days were its early ones. After the canal was abandoned the hamlet declined, and on May 6, 1845 the Court of Common Pleas, on the petition of Owen Stackhouse, ordered forty-six of its town lots vacated. By 1879 the village had about fifty people and, in the historian's words, little more than a name.
