How Knox Township, Columbiana County began
Knox Township, organized June 14, 1808, is the northwest corner township of Columbiana County, a full thirty-six-section township drained by the Mahoning River. John Thomas of Adams County, Pennsylvania entered sections 27, 28 and 29 in 1804 and was the first permanent settler. North Georgetown was laid out in 1830, and Homeworth, a cluster of buildings by 1840, was platted August 28, 1851 by Jonas Ruff, Samuel Fox and Jacob Williams after the Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad arrived; its post office was called Sandy until 1869. The Middle Sandy Presbyterian church, organized in 1821, is its oldest. The township is farmland, with a short oil boom at Homeworth in 1904-05.

Where the name comes from

Stories
A falling tree at Sabbath service
On Sunday morning, June 2, 1822, a congregation met for worship on the banks of the Sandy in Knox Township. The 1879 and 1905 county histories both record that during the service a tree fell and killed Mrs. Shaffer and her infant child. She was the wife of Jacob Shaffer, a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, who had settled in Knox in 1804 and who afterwards married Nancy Linard and raised a second family, among them Lydia, who married David Johnson. The meeting site was probably the one where the Rev. Robert Semple had preached in 1816, near the place where Middle Sandy Presbyterian Church was organized in 1821. The church, whose 1853 building was still in use in 1905, also saw the death of the Rev. Joshua Beer in 1843, who fell ill while preaching there.
Jonas Ruff's hotel and the railroad town
Homeworth owes its existence, the 1905 county history says, to the Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad. Some buildings stood on the site as early as 1840 and the post office, called Sandy, took the name Homeworth only in 1869, but the town was laid out on August 28, 1851 by Jonas Ruff, Samuel Fox and Jacob Williams. Ruff built the first hotel in 1852 and for several years a sign over its door read, 'Call and see Jonas Ruff.' Reuben Shidler succeeded him in 1863 and in 1871 P. W. Taylor bought it and ran it along with the post office. For about twenty-five years before 1880 the Homeworth Agricultural Works made grain drills, corn shellers and other farm machines there, and the oil strike of 1904-05 gave the town another boom.
