How Anderson Township, Hamilton County began

Anderson Township, bounded by the Ohio and Little Miami rivers, holds ground pioneer Benjamin Stites is said to have settled in 1788 near the Little Miami's mouth, and it organized formally in 1793 as part of the Virginia Military District, named for Richard Clough Anderson Sr., Virginia's chief surveyor of that district. Flinn's Ford, the southernmost crossing of the Little Miami, made the township an early travel node, and Ichabod Miller built what is now its oldest standing building, a log house on Clough Pike, in 1796. The township stayed mostly forest and farmland for a century and a half until postwar Cincinnati suburbanization added roughly 1,000 residents a year from the 1950s through the early 1990s, reaching 44,088 by 2020. Its riverside terraces also hold some of Hamilton County's best-documented Fort Ancient culture village and burial sites, including the Turpin Site near Newtown.

Settled 1788 (Benjamin Stites, near the mouth of the Little Miami River), incorporated 1793 (township organized), by organized within the Virginia Military District under chief surveyor Richard Clough Anderson Sr..

Where the name comes from

Anderson Township was named for Richard Clough Anderson Sr. (1750-1826), a Revolutionary War officer who served as Virginia's principal surveyor for the Virginia Military District, the reserve of Ohio land Virginia kept back to pay its war veterans, when the township was laid out.

Before the town

Anderson Township holds three federally recognized Fort Ancient culture archaeological sites on the terraces above the Little Miami and Ohio rivers. The Turpin Site, on a roughly 9-acre farmstead near Newtown, is a type site for an early Fort Ancient phase (about AD 1000-1250) in southwestern Ohio: local residents found a cemetery of fifty skeletons there in 1800, an 1881 account described its main mound as 10 feet high with a 175-foot circumference, Charles Metz excavated smaller mounds in the late 1800s, and the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History uncovered more than 60 burials in a 1947 excavation of the main mound, notably including many infant burials and pottery with distinctive guilloche decoration but few grave goods. A half-mile away, the Sand Ridge Site preserves a later Fort Ancient (Madisonville Focus) village layer over an earlier Late Woodland occupation on a ridge near the Little Miami, excavated as early as 1884 by Harvard's Peabody Museum, with fish bones (suckers, channel catfish, freshwater drum) showing the site was used seasonally for fishing. The roughly 650-acre Hahn Field Archeological District near Newtown, also Fort Ancient Madisonville Focus, combined camp and burial ground use. All three were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. No named historic-era (1700s) Native town or treaty-era encounter specific to the township was found in the sources consulted.

Stories

A landmark mound on the road to Batavia

For most of the 19th century, travelers on the road between Cincinnati and Batavia passed a ten-foot earthen mound near Newtown that an 1881 county history already treated as an old, familiar landmark, its 175-foot circumference visible from the road. Local residents had found a cemetery of fifty skeletons on the same ground as early as 1800, decades before anyone had a framework for what they were looking at. It took until the late 1800s for excavator Charles Metz to dig into the smaller mounds nearby, and not until 1947 that the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History opened the main mound itself, finding more than 60 burials, an unusually high number of them infants, and pottery decorated with a distinctive guilloche pattern but almost no grave goods -- a pattern archaeologists still use to define an early phase of the Fort Ancient culture across the whole southwestern Ohio region. The Turpin Site, along with two related village and burial grounds nearby, the Sand Ridge Site and the Hahn Field Archeological District, all made the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, formalizing what farmers and travelers along that road had already known by sight for a hundred years: this stretch of the Little Miami had been lived on, and buried in, for centuries before Ohio had a name.
