How Wheeling Township, Belmont County began
Wheeling Township was ordered created on June 14, 1808, its first election set for Smith's mill, and it takes its name from Wheeling Creek, which traverses its southern borders. Robert and William McCullough helped found the township's first and largest church, the Crabapple Presbyterian congregation, organized in 1804 after they sent to Georgetown, Ohio for a minister to 'come up and help' them form a 'praying society.' In its early decades the township was known for heavy wheat production, ground at one of ten flouring mills that operated there over the years and shipped down the Ohio and Mississippi river system to New Orleans, a trade route that predated the railroads that later reshaped the county's economy. The township has no incorporated village of its own; Uniontown was its early commercial center, and Fairpoint, founded around its 1876 post office, and the unincorporated communities of Oco, Bannock, Crabapple, and Blainesville lie within its borders.

Before the town
No Native village, camp, or trail specific to Wheeling Township was found in the sources consulted. The township borders both Harrison and Jefferson counties, within the same general eighteenth-century Lenape, Shawnee, Wyandot, and Mingo travel and hunting range.
Timeline
- — John Winters is believed to have built the township's first grist mill, at the forks of Crabapple Creek on the northeast quarter of section 25.
- — Robert and William McCullough send for a minister to organize a 'praying society'; the Crabapple Presbyterian church, the township's first and largest congregation, is organized with 40 members, its first elders being Wm. McCullough, Robert McCullough, and Daniel Merritt.
- — The first school house is built on the southwestern corner of section 1, range 5, township 9; the same year, the society later known as the Upper Wheeling Associate Reformed congregation is organized under Rev. Alexander Calderhead.
- — On June 14, the Belmont County commissioners order a new election district formed and 'known by the name of Wheeling township,' its first election to be held at Mr. Smith's mill (formerly Winters' mill); the first store in Uniontown is kept by William Sharp about this time.
- — The first township election is held at Smith's mill in April, though the officers elected went unrecorded.
- — Jacob Replogle conveys his mill on the southeast quarter of section 30 to Eli Nichols by deed; it becomes known as the Nichols mill (Replogle's mill before that).

- — Citizens of Wheeling Valley organize a Presbyterian society under the Presbytery of Steubenville; a 35x40 frame meeting house is built in 1839.
- — William Dunbar of Uniontown buys wheat at 40 cents a bushel, mills it, and, finding no buyer at $2.50 a barrel, floats several flatboats of flour to New Orleans in a month and clears $2,800; the same year the Unity congregation reaches its peak of about 250 communicants.
- — The Flushing Pike, a toll road crossing the township north to south, is completed.
- — A post office is established at Fairpoint, in the township's eastern section, its name chosen as a simple commendatory description of the site.
- — The township holds 8 schools and 3 post offices (Uniontown, Shepherdstown, and Wheeling Valley); Uniontown, the principal village, has one church, one school house, three stores, one hotel, and two blacksmith shops.

Stories
Wheat to New Orleans
Before railroads reorganized Belmont County's economy around coal and glass, Wheeling Township made its name in wheat. For twenty-five years, from roughly 1820 to 1845, the township was without rival as a wheat producer in the county, and small farmers routinely raised 100 to 500 bushels apiece. Altogether some ten flouring mills, along with numerous sawmills, operated at various times along Wheeling Creek and its tributaries, kept running night and day, and thousands of barrels of flour were shipped down the Ohio to the Mississippi and on to New Orleans, joining the broader river-borne trade that connected the Ohio Valley's interior farms to the Gulf Coast. Pork packing was a prominent sideline business too; one dealer at Uniontown, a Mr. Dunbar, shipped 150,000 to 200,000 pounds of packed pork annually. By the time the county history was compiled in 1879, wool growing had displaced wheat as the township's leading agricultural product, and the mills of the wheat era, with the exception of one converted to steam power, had fallen silent, 'numbered with the relics of the past.'
A sassafras without parallel
About a mile southeast of Uniontown, near the St. Clairsville pike, stood a sassafras tree that local residents considered without equal in the state of Ohio: about fifty feet high, measuring thirteen feet in circumference at the ground and eleven feet at two and a half feet up. The tree was recorded in the 1880 county history as a recognized local curiosity, one of the small natural landmarks, alongside springs, mill sites, and church grounds, that gave the township's farm families their sense of place.
