How Trotwood began

Trotwood grew from a mill site on the north fork of Wolf Creek into a railroad flag stop called Higgins Station, then took its present name from a Dickens character when the post office was established in 1866. It was carved out of Madison Township (organized 1809) and incorporated as a village in 1901, reached city status in 1971, and in 1996 merged with the surrounding township itself to head off further annexation by Dayton. It is now a Dayton suburb of about 30 square miles combining an old town core, mid-century subdivisions, and former farmland, and in 2019 it was struck by one of the EF4 tornadoes of the Memorial Day outbreak.

Settled 1824, platted 1854, incorporated 1901, by Platted as Higgins Station by Amos Higgins after he acquired Daniel Weymeyer's mill site; incorporated as the Village of Trotwood in 1901 out of Madison Township.

Where the name comes from

The settlement was first known as Higgins Station, for early entrepreneur Amos Higgins, who built a mill, tavern and inn by the Greenville & Miami and Dayton & Western railroad crossing in the early 1850s. When Lewis R. Pfoutz sought a post office for the community in 1866, the name Higgins was already taken by another Ohio post office, so he proposed Trotwood, after Aunt Betsey Trotwood, the great-aunt character in Charles Dickens's novel David Copperfield. Trotwood, Ohio is described by the local historical society as the only city in the United States bearing that name.

Before the town

The Trotwood-Madison Historical Society states the area was first inhabited by people of the Adena/Hopewell mound-building tradition, followed by Shawnee and Miami people after European settlement of the Northwest Territory began; a local story recorded by the society holds that a matriarch of the pioneer Iams family traded baked goods to Native visitors for rabbits and other game. Sycamore State Park, immediately west of Trotwood along Wolf Creek, preserves a ceremonial mound built by Adena people (roughly 800 BC to AD 700) and identifies the mid-to-late 1700s area as a stronghold of the Miami and Shawnee before the Treaty of Greenville (1795) opened it to settlement. The National Register-listed Wolf Creek Mound, on the highest hill at the confluence of Poplar Run and Wolf Creek west of central Trotwood, is a separately documented Adena-period earthwork within the city; no source we found goes beyond these general statements to name a specific village, trail or treaty boundary inside present-day Trotwood.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Miami, Adena culture.

Stories

A Dickens character names an Ohio railroad town

When Amos Higgins built his station, tavern and inn at the Main Street rail crossing in the early 1850s, the stop took his name, Higgins Station. By 1866, when local businessman Lewis R. Pfoutz went to establish a post office, another Ohio community already held the name Higgins for its own office. Pfoutz turned instead to fiction, submitting the name Trotwood, after Aunt Betsey Trotwood, David Copperfield's sharp-tongued great-aunt in Charles Dickens's 1850 novel. The name stuck through the village's 1901 incorporation and the city's growth afterward. The Trotwood-Madison Historical Society describes the result as the only city in the United States carrying that name.

Merging with the township to hold the line against Dayton

By the mid-1990s the City of Trotwood sat inside a Madison Township that Dayton was steadily annexing piece by piece, a common pattern around Ohio's larger cities in that era. Rather than watch the township whittled away, Trotwood and Madison Township combined into one political entity in 1996. The merger folded in the surrounding farms, golf courses and estates and more than tripled the city's land area to over 30 square miles, and it left one small enclave, the Townview neighborhood, completely surrounded by the city of Dayton.

The tornado of May 27, 2019

On the evening of May 27, 2019, one of fifteen tornadoes that touched down across the Miami Valley that night carried an EF4 rating as it tore through Trotwood. The storm damaged about 500 homes in the city and destroyed 59 of them outright, part of the broader Memorial Day weekend outbreak that struck the Dayton area. The event became one of the defining moments in the city's recent history, prompting years of rebuilding.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Trotwood, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,225 days of records, 1893-06-02 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
