How Harrison Township, Montgomery County began

Harrison Township was organized in 1841, about a month after President William Henry Harrison's death in office, and named in his honor. Settlers had farmed the Congress Lands there since the early 1800s, and small crossroads communities grew up around country churches and later around interurban rail stops: Ebenezer (later Northridge), founded around a Methodist congregation formed after the War of 1812; Shiloh, which took its name from a church established in the 1850s; and Fort McKinley, platted in the early twentieth century when the Dayton-Greenville traction line planned a stop nearby. Much of the township's original farmland has since been annexed into the city of Dayton, and Interstate 75's arrival in the 1950s turned what remained into a manufacturing and commercial corridor; the township today is an unincorporated ring of communities, including Northridge, Fort McKinley and most of Shiloh, wrapped around Dayton's north and west sides.

Settled early 1800s, incorporated 1841, by Organized as a Montgomery County township in 1841, named for President William Henry Harrison shortly after his death.

Where the name comes from

The township was established in 1841, about one month after President William Henry Harrison died in office, and was named to honor him.

Before the town

No mound, village, earthwork or named Native American site specific to present-day Harrison Township was found in the sources checked. The township's land lay within the Great Miami and Stillwater valley country used by the Miami and, under agreement with the Miami, the Shawnee, who held villages and hunting grounds through the region into the late 1700s; it was opened to settlement by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville, which several sources on the wider Dayton area describe as running near the Great Miami valley shortly before the first settlers arrived in the county. No source consulted names a specific village, camp, trail or burial site within the township's boundaries.

Nations recorded here: Miami, Shawnee.

Timeline

  1. — The Treaty of Greenville opened the Great Miami and Stillwater valley country, including the future Harrison Township, to settlement.
  2. — Settlers took up farms in the area under the Congress Lands system following the American Revolution, ahead of the township's formal organization.
  3. — A Methodist congregation organized after the War of 1812 and built its first log-and-clapboard church at the northwest corner of the future Dixie Drive/Frederick Pike intersection; the crossroads took the congregation's name, Ebenezer.
  4. — Harrison Township was organized and named for President William Henry Harrison, who had died in office about a month earlier.
  5. — A church called Shiloh was established in the township; the surrounding community took its name.
  6. — The Ebenezer congregation built a second church, of masonry, across the road from its original log structure; the building still stands.
  7. — The Fort McKinley area was established, by the township's own account (Wikipedia's Fort McKinley article gives 1914), when the Dayton-Greenville traction (interurban rail) line planned a stop near Salem Avenue and Free Pike; George F. Mumma suggested naming it for President McKinley, with 'Fort' added for distinction.
  8. — The Ebenezer congregation built a third church in random-rubble stone as suburban growth followed the Dayton & Troy interurban line, and renamed itself Victory Methodist Church, marking both a spiritual theme and the end of World War I; the surrounding area came to be called Northridge.
  9. — Construction of Interstate 75 through the township spurred its growth into a manufacturing and commercial corridor.
  10. — A catastrophic EF4 tornado struck the Shiloh area of the township as part of the Memorial Day 2019 Dayton-area tornado outbreak.

Stories

One church, three buildings, two names

The community now called Northridge grew up around a single Methodist congregation that outgrew its building twice. Formed in the years after the War of 1812, the congregation first met in a log-and-clapboard church at what is now the corner of Dixie Drive and Frederick Pike, and the place took its name, Ebenezer, from the Old Testament phrase meaning 'hitherto hath the Lord helped us.' A more permanent church of masonry went up across the road in 1860 and is still standing. By the 1910s the interurban line to Troy was pulling new residents up that corridor, and in 1919 the congregation built a third church, this one of random rubble stone in a plain gothic style, and renamed itself Victory Methodist Church, a name that read two ways that year: spiritual victory, and the just-ended World War. The old Ebenezer name stuck to the neighborhood and, in the early 1920s, to the local school district, even after the church itself had moved on.

A president's name, twice

Harrison Township carries a president's name for a simple reason of timing: it was organized in 1841, within weeks of President William Henry Harrison's death after only a month in office, and the new township took his name. Six decades later a different community inside the township, forming around a stop on the Dayton-Greenville interurban line, was named for another president, William McKinley, at the suggestion of local landowner George F. Mumma; 'Fort' was added for distinction, and the area was platted in 1905. Neither Fort McKinley nor Harrison Township has a fort or a presidential residence to show for the names, just the coincidence of being platted and organized while a sitting or recently deceased president was in the news.
