How Monterey Township, Putnam County began
Monterey Township, in the far western part of Putnam County, was created in 1849 from land detached from four neighboring townships plus eighteen sections taken from Van Wert County, compensation after part of Putnam went to the newly formed Auglaize County. Settled largely by German Catholic families beginning with Henry Schroeder and Henry Upland in 1845, it is one of the strongest Catholic townships in the county and holds the village of Ottoville in its east.

A Township Built From Four Others, Settled by Germans
Monterey Township exists because of a boundary swap. When Auglaize County was carved out of Allen County's southern end in 1848, the Ohio legislature took a compensating strip from Putnam County to even the loss -- seven tiers of sections from Riley Township, six from Pleasant (then still called Monroe), three each from Sugar Creek and Jennings. To make up for handing over so much of its own territory, Putnam received eighteen sections taken from neighboring Van Wert County, a six-by-three-mile strip lying immediately west of Jackson Township, organized in 1849 as Monterey. The settlers who filled it in were overwhelmingly German and Catholic: Henry Schroeder and Henry Upland arrived first, in 1845, followed within two years by Joseph Gruver, John Livingston, Jonas Dash, Conrad Henry and Bernard Esch. Population grew so slowly that only eleven votes were cast at the township's first election, held at Gruver's house on January 19, 1850 -- but the German Catholic character those handful of families established held: by the early twentieth century Monterey was counted among the strongest Catholic townships in the county, centered on Ottoville's St. Mary's Immaculate Conception church.
