How Mariemont began

Mariemont is a planned village on a bluff above the Little Miami River, built beginning with an April 23, 1923 groundbreaking on land philanthropist Mary Emery bought for roughly seven million dollars. Emery commissioned town planner John Nolen and some 25 American architects to design an English garden-city-style community meant to combine single-family homes with affordable apartments for people of varied incomes, though rising construction costs soon pushed rents beyond what many working-class residents could afford, and the new town, like many of its era, enforced restrictive covenants excluding African American and Asian residents. The village sits directly above the Madisonville site, a Fort Ancient-culture village abandoned before Europeans settled the area in 1786, and includes the separately listed Mariemont Embankment and Village Site. Mariemont was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2007 and named a national "Great Neighborhood" by the American Planning Association in 2008.

Platted 1923, by Mary M. Emery, philanthropist, with town planner John Nolen and about 25 American architects.

Where the name comes from

Mariemont is the name given to the planned community Mary Emery financed; no source here records how the name was chosen.

Before the town

Mariemont sits directly above the Madisonville site, a Fort Ancient-culture village that Wikipedia describes as "abandoned before Europeans settled in the area in 1786." The village's southern side also holds the separately NRHP-listed Mariemont Embankment and Village Site, an earthwork above the Little Miami River. No further period or cultural detail for either site is given here.

Nations recorded here: Fort Ancient culture.

Stories

A garden city with a broken promise

Mary Emery poured roughly seven million dollars into Mariemont with an explicitly inclusive vision: a planned English garden-city suburb, designed by town planner John Nolen and some 25 leading American architects, where single-family homes and affordable low-rise apartments would sit side by side and welcome residents of varied economic backgrounds. The village broke ground on April 23, 1923, and its curving streets, town square and English-cottage architecture won it national recognition, eventually a National Historic Landmark designation in 2007 and an American Planning Association "Great Neighborhood" award in 2008. But the promise did not fully hold: construction costs pushed rents above what many working-class families could pay, and the new community enforced restrictive covenants barring residents of African and Asian descent.

Years of quiet buying, one silver spade

Mary Emery was widowed in 1906 when Thomas J. Emery died in Cairo, Egypt, on a business trip; she had also lost two sons. She and her business manager Charles Livingood, a college friend of her late son, hired the town planner John Nolen of Cambridge, Massachusetts, to design a model community in the Little Miami valley east of Cincinnati. To keep prices down, Emery bought land quietly from about 30 owners over many years, at a total cost of over seven million dollars. On April 23, 1923 she and Mariemont Company officials broke ground with a silver spade, and the village was built over the next years by 26 architectural firms. The Mariemont Inn opened in 1929, two years after her death.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
