How Fairfax began

Fairfax incorporated as a village to head off annexation by neighboring Cincinnati. Columbia Township's own history gives the year as 1951, while Wikipedia and the village police department's history give 1955. Unlike Indian Hill and Mariemont, which used the same strategy in 1941 and left Columbia Township, Fairfax remained part of the township until January 1, 2010, when it withdrew by forming a paper township, due in part, Wikipedia says, to village residents' low tax contribution compared with their influence on township elections. The village includes the Joseph Ferris House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its low-lying northeastern residential section, known as Lower Fairfax, has flooded often during heavy rains along the creek, with multiple deaths, and the village has bought and demolished homes there with federal funds.

Incorporated 1951 per Columbia Township's history; 1955 per Wikipedia and the Fairfax police department's history, by Incorporated specifically to head off annexation by Cincinnati, the same strategy Indian Hill and Mariemont had used in 1941; unlike those two, Fairfax chose to remain part of Columbia Township rather than leave it outright.

Where the name comes from

Before the town

No Native American village, trail, mound or treaty line specific to the Fairfax site itself is recorded; a small village carved from Columbia Township land in the Little Miami valley.

  4. — The Fairfax Police Department is formed with one officer; two additional officers are hired about a year later.

Stories

Incorporating to stay independent, then flooding anyway

Fairfax incorporated to keep Cincinnati from annexing it, as Indian Hill and Mariemont had done in 1941. The year is given differently: Columbia Township's history says 1951, while Wikipedia and the Fairfax police department's history say 1955. Unlike Indian Hill and Mariemont, which left Columbia Township, Fairfax stayed under the township's government until 2010. Lower Fairfax, a low-lying residential pocket in the northeast corner of the village, has flooded repeatedly along Little Duck Creek, with multiple deaths, and the village has used federal funds to buy and demolish homes in the flood zone. On January 1, 2010, Fairfax withdrew from Columbia Township by forming a paper township, due in part to village residents' low tax contribution compared with their influence on township elections.

Mostly estimated. Only 2% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Fairfax - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

47,958 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
