How Greenfield began

Greenfield was founded in 1799 by General Duncan McArthur and named for its rural, green appearance; most of the village sits in northeastern Madison Township, Highland County, though it also extends into Ross County. It grew into a mill and manufacturing town and is nationally notable as the home of C.R. Patterson and Sons, the only automobile company in United States history to be entirely Black-owned. The village bought its own 29.5-mile rail line in 1988 rather than see it abandoned, and today Travellers' Rest Inn (1812), the town's oldest stone building, survives as a museum.

Settled 1799, by General Duncan McArthur.

Where the name comes from

Named for its rural, green appearance.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, or trail specific to Greenfield is recorded in the sources checked. The site fell within the 1795 Treaty of Greenville cession, which opened this part of southern Ohio, formerly Shawnee and Wyandot hunting ground, to American settlement four years before the town was founded.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Wyandot.

  6. — Charles Patterson's son Frederick Douglass Patterson is denied entry to the local high school because of his race; Patterson sues the board of education in September 1886, and in April 1887 the judge orders Frederick admitted. 7. — Frederick Douglass Patterson enrolls at Ohio State University, where he becomes the first Black member of the OSU football team.
  8. — Edward Lee McClain High School opens in Greenfield, the first school in Ohio with an indoor swimming pool.

Stories

The only Black-owned car company in America

Charles Richard Patterson crossed the Ohio River out of slavery in Virginia in 1861 and settled in Greenfield, where he found work as a blacksmith. In 1873 he went into partnership with the carriage builder J.P. Lowe as J.P. Lowe & Company, which he bought out and renamed C.R. Patterson, Son & Company in 1893, and the firm went on to build carriages, then automobiles, then truck and bus bodies. It remains the only automobile manufacturer in United States history known to have been entirely Black-owned. Patterson's fight for his family did not stop at the factory gate: when the Greenfield school board refused to admit his son Frederick to the local high school in 1886 on account of his race, Patterson sued, the court ordered Frederick admitted in April 1887, and Frederick became the first African American to graduate from the Greenfield school before going on to Ohio State, where he was the first Black player on the football team.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
