How Green Township, Hamilton County began

Green Township was organized in 1809 out of land John Cleves Symmes had originally set aside as an academy township for his Symmes Purchase, land that a 1802 court order instead split, giving half to Miami Company investor Elias Boudinot. Named for Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene, it stayed a farming township for over a century, holding just 1,456 residents in 1820 and under 5,000 as late as 1900. Suburban Cincinnati reached it hard after World War II: the township's population jumped 76.7 percent in the 1960s alone and passed 60,000 by 2020, absorbing communities such as Bridgetown, Covedale, Mack, Monfort Heights, and White Oak while three incorporated cities (Cheviot, Cincinnati's Westwood annexation of 1896, and part of Cincinnati proper) carved themselves out of or grew alongside its original bounds. Two 19th-century farm buildings that survive from its rural era, the 1936 Bappert House and the vanished Old Gothic Barns, are its only individual National Register listings.

Incorporated 1809 (township organized), by Ohio General Assembly, from land originally in the Symmes Purchase.

Where the name comes from

Green Township was named for Nathanael Greene (1742-1786), a Revolutionary War major general and one of George Washington's most trusted commanders, a common namesake choice for Ohio townships in the decades after the war.

Before the town

No Native village, trail, mound, or documented encounter specific to Green Township itself was found in the sources consulted. The township's land was part of the roughly 311,000 to 330,000-acre Symmes Purchase between the Great and Little Miami rivers, land the Miami and Shawnee held and used for hunting and travel before the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Nations recorded here: Miami, Shawnee.

Timeline

  1. — Judge John Cleves Symmes's Symmes Purchase, which included the future Green Township, is bought from the Continental Congress; Symmes originally reserved the township as an academy (school) township.
  2. — A court order splits the township, awarding half to Miami Company investor Elias Boudinot, part of the wider legal disputes over the Symmes Purchase's uncertain titles.
  3. — Green Township is organized and named for Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene.
  4. — The township's population stands at 1,456.
  5. — Farmer William Bell, one of the township's earliest settlers, builds the Old Gothic Barns on Colerain Avenue near the end of his life (he died in 1847), an unusually pure Carpenter Gothic-style farm building for the region.
  6. — Population is still just 4,716, reflecting the township's continued rural, farming character a century after organization.
  7. — Western Hills Airport (also called Frank Airport or Cheviot Airport) opens in the Bridgetown area, the first airport in western Hamilton County; it closes in 1949 as aircraft outgrew the facility.
  8. — William C. and Lucia Riedlin Schott build Pine Meer, a nearly 100-acre Tudor Revival gentleman's farm at 5336 Cleves-Warsaw Pike designed by the Cincinnati firm Rendigs, Panzer and Martin, with a sunken music room, a carriage house, and formal gardens.
  9. — The Joseph and Cecilia Bappert House, a Tudor Revival brick residence at 1550 Neeb Road, is built; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
  10. — Population reaches 27,166 as postwar Cincinnati suburbanization accelerates.
  11. — The Old Gothic Barns are added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 20; the barns are gone by the early 2010s and restaurants now occupy the site.
  12. — Pine Meer is listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 30, the township's only recorded historic house listing.
  13. — Township population reaches 60,424, more than 40 times its 1820 count.

Stories

A Gothic barn on a Miami Purchase farm

Near the end of his life, sometime between 1840 and 1850, Green Township farmer William Bell built a set of barns unlike anything else on a southwestern Ohio farmstead: sharply pitched roofs, vertical board-and-batten siding, a spired cupola, and tall, pointed lancet windows and doors borrowed straight from the Gothic Revival architecture then fashionable for churches and college halls, not livestock buildings. Bell was one of Green Township's earliest settlers, working land that had been part of John Cleves Symmes's Miami Purchase before a contested 1802 court division carved the township in two. The barns' unmatched purity of style earned them a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, on Colerain Avenue in the White Oak area, but preservation on paper did not save the buildings themselves: sometime before the early 2010s they came down, and restaurants now sit where a 19th-century farmer once put Gothic windows on a hay barn.
