How Cheviot began

Scottish immigrant John Craig bought 320 acres from Elias Boudinot and, on March 21, 1818, laid out a town he named for the Cheviot Hills of his native southern Scotland. The settlement grew slowly as a farming community west of Cincinnati, counting just 325 residents in 1880, before incorporating as a village in 1901 and becoming a city in 1931. Its 1936 fieldhouse and community center on Robb Avenue is Cheviot's own centerpiece National Register listing, distinct from the Westwood and Cincinnati properties that share its ZIP code. The city's population peaked at 11,135 in 1970 before settling to 8,658 by 2020.

Platted March 21, 1818, incorporated village, 1901; city, 1931, by John Craig.

Where the name comes from

John Craig, a Scottish immigrant, named the town he platted in 1818 for the Cheviot Hills of southern Scotland, the border country he had emigrated from.

Stories

A Scottish name on a Cincinnati farm

John Craig had already made the long crossing from Scotland to Ohio before he ever platted a town, and when he finally bought 320 acres of land from Elias Boudinot in 1818, he gave the new settlement the name of the place he had left behind: the Cheviot Hills, the rolling border country between Scotland and England. The town he founded on March 21, 1818, stayed a small, unremarkable farming community for most of the next century, still counting only 325 residents as late as 1880, more than sixty years after Craig laid it out. Its slow start makes its later fieldhouse, built in 1936 on Robb Avenue at the tail end of the Great Depression, feel almost out of scale with the small village that came before it -- a substantial public building for a community that had spent most of its history as scattered farms, built in the same decade the city's population was finally beginning the growth that would carry it past 11,000 residents by 1970.
