How Delhi Township, Hamilton County began

European American settlers founded the village of South Bend on this stretch of the Ohio River in 1789, and when Hamilton County organized the following year the name carried over to South Bend Township, which then covered what is now Delhi Township. Residents petitioned to split off a new township in 1816, originally spelled "Delhigh," which drifted to "Delhi" sometime in the 19th century for reasons no source explains. The township grew slowly, from 1,158 residents in 1820, and holds two rare survivors from its early farm-and-river economy: the Sedam Springhouse, built over a natural spring on Colonel Cornelius Sedam's land possibly as early as the 1790s, and Anderson Ferry, a Ohio River crossing running continuously since 1817 and now the last of dozens of ferries that once served the Cincinnati area. Like its neighbors it suburbanized fast after 1950, reaching a peak of 29,078 residents around 1980 before settling near 28,760 by 2020.

Settled 1789 (village of South Bend), incorporated 1816 (township organized, split from South Bend/Green Township area), by resident petition.

Where the name comes from

The township was originally recorded as "Delhigh" when organized in 1816; the spelling shifted to "Delhi" sometime in the 19th century, for reasons no source consulted explains.

Before the town

No Native village, mound, or documented encounter specific to Delhi Township itself was found in the sources consulted. The township lies along the Ohio River within the Symmes Purchase, land the Miami and Shawnee held and used for hunting and travel before the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Nations recorded here: Miami, Shawnee.

Stories

The last ferry on this stretch of the Ohio

George W. Anderson began running a ferry across the Ohio River in 1817, carrying Kentucky farmers and their produce north to Cincinnati's markets on a crossing that connected what is now Anderson Ferry Road on the Ohio side to Constance, Kentucky. It changed hands over the following century and a half -- the Anderson family sold it to the Kottmyer family, who sold it back to the Andersons in 1986 -- but it never stopped running. Dozens of ferries once worked this section of the Ohio River before bridges made most of them obsolete; Anderson Ferry is the only one still in business, still carrying cars and passengers across the same river crossing it has held for more than two centuries. It even had an unexpected second act in 2020 and 2021, when construction and closures on the Brent Spence Bridge sent record numbers of drivers looking for another way across the river, and found the same small ferry that had been doing the job since before Ohio had a paved road to it.
