How Miami Township, Hamilton County began

Miami Township takes its name from its position at the point where the Great Miami River meets the Ohio River, the lowest elevation point in the state of Ohio. William Henry Harrison, later the ninth U.S. president, farmed here and helped fund the Cincinnati and Whitewater Canal Tunnel that opened through the township's ridgeline in 1837; when he died a month into his presidency in 1841, his family buried him on Mount Nebo overlooking North Bend, where he, his wife Anna, and their son John Scott Harrison (father of a later president, Benjamin Harrison) all lie in a tomb the state has maintained since 1919. The township grew from 1,426 residents in 1820 to 15,969 by 2020, and today includes the villages of Cleves and North Bend and the community of Addyston along the Ohio River, plus the Shawnee Lookout earthworks.

Where the name comes from

Miami Township is named for its location at the confluence of the Great Miami River and the Ohio River, the Great Miami itself named for the Miami nation, who held and used this stretch of southwestern Ohio before the Symmes Purchase and the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Before the town

Miami Township holds the Shawnee Lookout earthworks and Miami Fort, prehistoric sites on the bluffs above the Great Miami-Ohio River confluence. The township's own name preserves the Miami nation's historic presence in the region.

Stories

A canal tunnel a future president helped dig

Before he was a general, a territorial governor, or a one-month president, William Henry Harrison was a working farmer at North Bend with a direct financial interest in getting produce to market, and when the Cincinnati and Whitewater Canal needed to punch through the steep ridge separating North Bend from Cleves, Harrison provided the land and materials to make it happen. The result, finished in 1837, was Ohio's first canal tunnel of its type: a 0.3-mile brick-lined passage, just 22 feet from ceiling to channel bottom, unusual among American canal tunnels for including a towpath so mules could walk alongside the boats instead of requiring boatmen to "leg" them through by pushing off the walls by hand. The canal itself did not last: floods forced its abandonment in 1856, not even twenty years after the tunnel opened, though a railroad company found the passage still useful enough to run trains through it from 1863 to 1888. Harrison did not live to see any of that decline -- he died in 1841, four years after the tunnel's completion, and was buried on a hilltop overlooking the same river valley his canal tunnel had been built to serve.
