How Woodville Township, Sandusky County began

Woodville Township was organized by county commissioners' order on April 1, 1840, carved out of the older Madison and Clay townships, and named, like the village of Woodville at its center, for Amos E. Wood, one of the new township's leading citizens. The first permanent clearing on the site of Woodville village was made in 1825, occupied the following year by Thomas and Harriet Miller, whose cabin became the area's first tavern. The village of Woodville itself, at the township's center, is covered in its own file.

Settled 1825, incorporated 1840, by organized by county commissioners' order dated April 1, 1840, out of the older Madison and Clay townships, with the first election ordered for April 14 at the house of Amos E. Wood.

Where the name comes from

Named for Amos E. Wood, a leading citizen of the township at the time of its 1840 organization and the same namesake as the village of Woodville at the township's center; the first township election was held at the tavern kept by his father, Ephraim Wood, on the property just east of the present village.

Before the town

Trailmarker Park, in the village of Woodville at this township's center, marks a traditional Native American crossing point on the Portage River; see the Woodville village file for that site. The 1882 county history adds that local tradition placed an old Indian 'beating-post' on section thirty-five along Sugar Creek, within the township, though it records nothing further about its use or the people associated with it. No source found records an additional Native village, mound, or treaty event specific to the township's outlying rural areas.

Timeline

  1. — The first clearing on the site of Woodville village was made; a log cabin built there was occupied the following year by Thomas and Harriet Miller, who kept it as a tavern until Miller's death in 1828 and, under Harriet, until her remarriage in 1837.
  2. — The Maumee and Western Reserve turnpike, a corduroy mud pike, is ordered built through the future township and adjoining land sold as pike lands, the signal for settlement; the first cabin on the future village site is built.
  3. — The Baldwin and Chaffa families from Geauga County settle in the Black Swamp in October; only five families live in the township.
  4. — Ephraim Wood and his son-in-law George H. Price bought land on opposite banks of the Portage River in what became the village of Woodville; Wood's tavern, built soon after, hosted the township's first election in 1840.
  5. — Davis Dunham settles in the south of section 25 and German Lutheran families begin arriving; he later serves in the Ohio legislature.
  6. — David B. Banks built the township's first grist-mill and saw-mill, in section twenty-nine.
  7. — The village of Woodville, at the township's center, was laid out and platted.
  8. — C. B. Collins, grading the mud pike, buries his wife by Sugar Creek, starting the township's oldest burying ground on his land.
  9. — Woodville Township was organized by county commissioners' order dated April 1, out of the older Madison and Clay townships; the first township officers were elected that summer at the Wood tavern.
  10. — Rev. George Cronnewett, pastor of the Lutheran church, arrives in Woodville; he organizes thirteen churches in his career and in 25 years preaches about 1,250 sermons and travels 64,000 miles.
  11. — A three-year-old son of Stephen Brown is buried half a mile north of Woodville, the first grave of what becomes the township cemetery; two acres are bought for $15 an acre in 1847.
  12. — Amos E. Wood, for whom the township is named, dies at age 39; his father Ephraim Wood, a Vermont native whose tavern hosted the first township election, dies in 1860.
  13. — Township officers elected this year include R. Hartman, J. H. Hurralbrink and Henry Blausey as trustees; township elections have always been held in Woodville village.

Stories

Hog marks and strayed cattle

The earliest Woodville Township record books, kept by the clerk, noted indentures, accounts of stray cattle and the marks by which hogs and sheep were recognized. Sometimes the animal was branded, sometimes painted, but the most popular way, the county history says, was the sanguinary process of slitting and mutilating the animals' ears. The first election, in summer 1840, was held at the old Wood tavern east of the village, with three trustees, two justices and a clerk chosen, and the history remarks that, as no politics was involved, everybody had a good time such as only a pioneer tavern could furnish. The township was named for Amos E. Wood, a leading citizen, who died ten years later.
