How Osnaburg Township, Stark County began
Osnaburg Township was organized March 16, 1809 in southeastern Stark County, and its name -- adapted from the German city of Osnabruck by swapping the suffix '-bruck' for '-burg' to avoid the umlaut in English -- is unique to this township in Ohio. James Leeper laid out the village of Osnaburg around 1807, hoping it would become the county seat, a hope that went instead to Canton; the village itself was later renamed East Canton in the 1910s. The township held one gristmill, seven sawmills, two tanneries, four stores, and a German-and-English print shop by 1833, and today includes the village of East Canton and a 2020 population of 5,421.
Settled c. 1807 (village of Osnaburg), incorporated township organized March 16, 1809, by James Leeper (village).
Where the name comes from
The township's name derives from the German city of Osnabruck; English speakers replaced the German suffix '-bruck' (bridge) with '-burg' (town/fortress) to avoid the umlaut character, and it remains the only Osnaburg Township in Ohio.
Before the town

Stories
The village that lost the county seat and its own name
James Leeper laid out the village of Osnaburg around 1807, and the settlers who joined him did so with a specific expectation: that their town, not the newer settlement platted downriver by Bezaleel Wells, would become the seat of the county being organized around them. Canton won that contest instead, and Osnaburg spent the next century as a modest township village -- still appearing under its original name on an 1875 plat map -- before finally giving up its own identity too, renaming itself East Canton sometime in the 1910s, a name that memorializes the very rival town that had beaten it to the county seat a century before. The township around it kept the older name, so Osnaburg Township today surrounds a village called East Canton, one of Stark County's clearer examples of a place's ambition outliving its name.
