How Gallipolis began

Gallipolis was founded October 17, 1790 by about 500 French immigrants who had been swindled by the fraudulent Scioto Company and arrived to find their land deeds worthless; it became the second permanent American settlement in the Northwest Territory after Marietta, and has been the seat of Gallia County since the county's 1803 organization. A U.S. post office opened there in 1794, and the town grew into a Ohio River trading and, later, institutional center, home from 1893 to the state's Asylum for Epileptics and, in the early 20th century, to Edward Alexander Bouchet, the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from a U.S. university, who led the town's segregated Lincoln High School. Gallipolis's modern history was reshaped by tragedy on December 15, 1967, when the Silver Bridge connecting it to Point Pleasant, West Virginia collapsed, killing 46 people; the resulting population loss dropped the town below the state's 5,000-resident threshold for city status, so it has operated as a legally classified village, still under its old city charter, ever since. Its historic downtown, with 138 contributing buildings along the Ohio River, is itself listed on the National Register as the Gallipolis Historic District.

Settled 1790-10-17, platted 1790, by the French 500, French emigres defrauded by the Scioto Company.

Where the name comes from

The name combines the Latin/Greek "Galli-," referring to the Gauls (the French), with the Greek "-polis" (city), meaning "city of the French" -- a direct reference to the settlers who founded the town.

Before the town

No source found records a Native village, mound, trail, or treaty event specific to the Gallipolis town site itself. The town was built in 1790 on land within the Ohio Company of Associates' purchase, on ground that lay within the broader pre-1795 Shawnee homeland of the central Ohio River valley; formal Native title to the area was not extinguished until the Treaty of Greenville in 1795, five years after the town's founding. Mound Hill Cemetery, within present Gallipolis on State Route 141, carries the old local name "Fortification Hill," which may point to an earlier earthwork, but no source found confirms a Native origin for the site rather than its documented use as a burial ground since 1880.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee.

  • Mound Hill Cemetery / "Fortification Hill" (other) — State Route 141, Gallipolis, burial ground documented from 1880; possible but unconfirmed earlier earthwork (visitgallia.com)

Timeline

  1. — The French 500 found Gallipolis on the Ohio River, building a stockaded village of about 80 log cabins after learning their Scioto Company land deeds were worthless.
  2. — A U.S. post office begins operating in Gallipolis.
  3. — Gallipolis becomes the seat of newly organized Gallia County.
  4. — Henry Cushing and his sister Elizabeth build Our House, a Federal-style tavern and inn on the riverfront that operates until 1860.
  5. — General Lafayette is entertained at Our House during his triumphant tour of America, and leaves his jacket behind; it remains in the museum's collection.
  6. — Gatewood, a house at 76 State Street, is built; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
  7. — The state-run Asylum for Epileptics and Epileptic Insane opens on Mill Creek Road; its stone water towers are later individually listed on the National Register (1978).
  8. — Edward Alexander Bouchet -- the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from a U.S. university (Yale, physics, 1876) -- becomes principal and teacher at Gallipolis's Lincoln High School, a position he holds until poor health forces his retirement in 1913.
  9. — The Silver Bridge linking Gallipolis (via Kanauga) to Point Pleasant, West Virginia collapses, killing 46 people; the resulting population drop costs Gallipolis its legal status as a city.
  10. — The Gallipolis Historic District, 138 contributing buildings along 3rd Avenue, Vine and Spruce Streets and the Ohio River, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Stories

A Yale physicist teaching high school on the Ohio River

In 1876 Edward Alexander Bouchet became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from an American university, completing his doctorate in physics at Yale. The achievement opened no doors to a research career: no American university of the era would hire a Black physicist, so Bouchet spent the next 26 years teaching chemistry and physics at the Institute for Colored Youth in Philadelphia. After that school's board eliminated the college-preparatory track he had built there, he moved through a series of teaching and administrative posts in the South and Midwest, running the academic program at St. Paul's Normal and Industrial School in Virginia from 1905 to 1908. That year he came to Gallipolis to lead Lincoln High School, the town's school for Black students, serving as both principal and teacher. He held the post until 1913, when arteriosclerosis forced him to retire; he returned to his birthplace of New Haven, Connecticut, and died there in 1918. His five years in Gallipolis were among the last of a working life spent, despite an Ivy League doctorate, almost entirely inside the segregated school system his own credentials should have let him leave behind.

71% of these days are measurements from a gauge inside Gallipolis; the rest are estimated from the nearest gauges around it.

49,884 days of records, 1890-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
