How Harding Township, Lucas County began

Harding Township, a 9.4-square-mile farm township in far western Lucas County, is the only township of that name in Ohio. It borders Spencer Township on the north and east, Swanton Township on the south and Fulton County on the west, and holds no village, only the small unincorporated community of Sharples near Sharples Cemetery. It is not among the thirteen Lucas County townships listed at the beginning of 1922, and it held its 100th-anniversary celebration at the township hall in March 2026, so it was apparently organized in the mid-1920s; its own community page says some families trace their roots to the original settlement out of the Black Swamp. The township owns an eight-acre cemetery on Angola Road, and it had 726 residents in 2020.

Settled pioneer-era settlement out of the Black Swamp, exact date undetermined in sources consulted.
