How Southington Township, Trumbull County began

Southington Township, in western Trumbull County, is best documented today through its former high school: attorney Newton Chalker, born in Southington in 1842, funded a consolidated high school and library after township voters approved school consolidation on October 10, 1905; the resulting Chalker High School, designed by architect Alfred Dole, opened with fanfare on August 22, 1907, alongside a Civil War monument and park Chalker also funded in 1910. No source we consulted gives the township's own founding date, first settler or the origin of its name.

Where the name comes from

No source consulted explains the origin of the name Southington; it is plausibly connected to Southington, Connecticut, in keeping with the Western Reserve's pattern of transplanted Connecticut names, but no source we found confirms it.

Before the town

No Native village, camp or treaty event specific to Southington Township is recorded in the sources we reviewed. The township lies in western Trumbull County within the wider region the county's 1882 history describes as Delaware-occupied hunting ground used seasonally by Seneca and Mingo bands through the 1700s, but no source found names a site inside the township's present boundaries.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Seneca, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).

Stories

One attorney's gift, a century of schooling

Newton Chalker, born in Southington Township in 1842, left the township a legacy few small Trumbull County communities can match: after voters approved consolidating their scattered district schools on October 10, 1905, Chalker's donation funded a proper high school and library, designed by architect Alfred Dole and built between mid-1906 and August 1907 at a cost of twenty to thirty thousand dollars -- real money for a rural township at the time. The high school opened to considerable local fanfare on August 22, 1907, and Chalker was not finished giving: in 1910 he funded a Civil War monument and small park set between the high school and its companion elementary building. The school Chalker's money built served Southington Township's children for over a century, closing only in 2011, and the building -- along with his Civil War monument -- was added to the National Register of Historic Places that same year, with the elementary school itself folded into the listing the following year.
