How Scipio Township, Meigs County began
Scipio Township lies in the northwestern part of Meigs County and was set off from Athens County in 1819, the same year Meigs County itself was formally organized. It has no incorporated village; its one named community is Harrisonville, founded in 1840 and named for William Henry Harrison after his election that year, which kept a post office from 1841 to 1964 and still has a Presbyterian church on State Route 143. The Leading Creek Conservancy District, formed in the late 1960s, provides a rural potable water system in the area. The 2020 census recorded 1,213 people.
Incorporated 1819.
Where the name comes from
No source found explaining why the township took the name Scipio (a classical Roman name reused for several Ohio townships, including one in Seneca County); the origin is not recorded. Harrisonville, the township's one named community, was named for William Henry Harrison after his 1840 presidential-election win.
Before the town
No Native American village, trail, or burial site has been documented within Scipio Township specifically in the sources checked. Two NRHP-listed sites that share this township's ZIP codes are not in it: the 'Mound Cemetery Mound' is an Adena burial mound in Chester Township, and the 'Pomeroy Historic District' is downtown Pomeroy, both outside Scipio Township. At the county level, this land was claimed by the United States from the Wyandot, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware) and other nations through the Treaty of Fort Harmar (1789) and the Treaty of Greenville (1795). Nothing site-specific to Scipio Township was found.

Stories
A village named for a president
Harrisonville was laid out in 1840, the year William Henry Harrison beat Martin Van Buren in the 'log cabin and hard cider' presidential campaign, and the new settlement took his name in the excitement of that election. A post office followed in 1841 and stayed open for over a century, until 1964, long after Harrisonville had settled into being simply a rural crossroads with a Presbyterian church on what is now State Route 143. It never incorporated and never grew into a village in the legal sense, but the name has outlasted the office that made it official.
