How Richmond Heights began

Richmond Heights was the last part of Euclid Township to incorporate, forming as the Village of Claribel in 1917 and renaming itself Richmond Heights the following year, for reasons no source reviewed here explains. Its first industry, before it was a residential suburb at all, was a series of charcoal pits supplying fuel to Cleveland's growing iron industry. The village stayed thinly settled farmland into the 1950s -- only 891 people in 1950 -- until gas and water mains reached it in 1953 and triggered more than fivefold growth over the decade; it became a city in 1960. The General Electric Lamp Glass Department ran a plant on Highland Road from an early date until 1990, and the city's population, once overwhelmingly white, had become majority Black by 2020.

Incorporated village (as Claribel), 1917; renamed Richmond Heights, 1918; city, 1960.

Where the name comes from

The village organized in 1917 as Claribel, part of Euclid Township, and was renamed Richmond Heights in 1918. No source we reviewed explains either name's origin; that is an open question, not a settled fact.

Before the town

No source we reviewed identifies a specific, named Native American village, mound, or treaty site within present Richmond Heights; the land was part of Euclid Township, in the Euclid Creek watershed near Lake Erie, ceded to the United States by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot.

Timeline

  4. — Population stands at 265.
  5. — Population is still only 891, largely undeveloped farmland.
  6. — Gas and water mains are installed, opening the village to the subdivision development that follows.
  7. — Population reaches 5,068, more than five times its 1950 level, and Richmond Heights incorporates as a city.
  8. — The General Electric Lamp Glass Department plant on Highland Road closes; the site later becomes OMNI Systems.
  9. — Population peaks at 10,944.

Stories

From charcoal pits to a subdivision boom

Long before it was rows of postwar ranch houses, the farmland that became Richmond Heights supplied a cruder industrial input: charcoal, burned in pits and hauled to feed Cleveland's growing iron furnaces, the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History records as the area's first real industry. That rural character held for decades after incorporation -- as late as 1950 the village counted only 891 residents. The turning point was infrastructure, not industry: when gas and water mains finally reached Richmond Heights in 1953, subdivisions followed within a few years, and the population multiplied more than fivefold by 1960, the same year the village became a city. The General Electric Lamp Glass Department plant on Highland Road anchored the new city's industrial side until it closed in 1990.

Mostly estimated. Only 6% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Richmond Heights - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

56,912 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
