How Euclid began
Euclid Township was surveyed by the Connecticut Land Company in 1796 and named for the ancient Greek mathematician Euclid of Alexandria; its first settlers, including the Burke, Dille and Coleman families, arrived from 1798 and especially from the spring of 1804. Lakeside farms and vineyards gave way to industry through the early 20th century, and the northeast section of the township incorporated as the village of Euclid in 1903, becoming a city in 1930. Euclid gave its name to the 1926 U.S. Supreme Court case Village of Euclid v. Ambler Realty Co., which upheld municipal zoning nationwide, and today is an industrial Lake Erie suburb of about 50,000 on Cleveland's northeastern border.

Where the name comes from

Before the town
No source we reviewed names a specific Native American village, trail or burial site within present Euclid. The township was surveyed in 1796, the same year Moses Cleaveland's party arrived at the Cuyahoga River, and lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve land secured for settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Stories
The zoning case that took Euclid's name nationwide
By the early 1920s the village of Euclid, wedged between Cleveland's expanding industry and Lake Erie, worried that factories creeping east along the lakeshore would swallow its residential character. In 1922 the village adopted a detailed zoning ordinance sorting land into six use classes, three height classes and four area classes -- and one of the parcels it restricted was 68 acres owned by the Ambler Realty Company, which had been counting on selling the land for industrial use at industrial prices. Ambler sued, arguing the ordinance destroyed the tract's value without compensation, and won in the lower federal court. The Supreme Court reversed that ruling on November 22, 1926, holding that Euclid's zoning was a reasonable use of the village's police power to protect public welfare. The decision, still cited today simply as 'Euclid,' gave every American municipality the legal footing to zone -- separating factories from houses, apartments from single-family lots -- and touched off the nationwide spread of zoning ordinances that has shaped how American towns and suburbs look ever since.
A farm boy's arc lights
Charles F. Brush was born on a farm in Euclid Township on March 17, 1849, about ten miles from downtown Cleveland, and it was there, and later at Cleveland's Central High School, that he first tinkered with electric arc lighting as a teenager. He went on to secure backing from Cleveland's Telegraph Supply Company in 1876 to build a practical dynamo for arc lamps, patented the generator in 1877, and by 1881 had arc-lighting systems running in cities across the country -- Cleveland's Public Square was lit by Brush arc lamps two years before Thomas Edison's Pearl Street Station lit up part of New York. Brush later built his mansion on Cleveland's Euclid Avenue, where in 1888 he powered the house with what is described as the world's first automatically operated wind turbine generator, making it the first home in Cleveland with electricity -- a full circle from the Euclid Township farm boy to one of the era's best-known American inventors.
