How Highland Heights began

Highland Heights was settled in 1805 by New York families, with Rufus Mapes remembered as the first settler, and was part of Mayfield Township from that township's 1819 formation until the village incorporated on its own in 1920. It stayed a small farm community linked to Cleveland by an 1877 plank road and an 1899 interurban railway, then nearly quadrupled in population in the 1950s as postwar subdivisions arrived, becoming a city in 1967. It was the first city in Cuyahoga County to require underground wiring and ornamental lamp posts in new subdivisions, and from 1974 to 1993 was home to the Front Row Theater, a 3,200-seat theater-in-the-round where Roy Orbison played his last concert two days before his death in 1988.

Settled 1805 (New York families; Rufus Mapes remembered as first settler), incorporated village, 1920; city, 1967.

Where the name comes from

Before the town

No source we reviewed identifies a specific, named Native American village, mound, or treaty site within present Highland Heights; the land was part of Mayfield Township, ceded to the United States by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Stories

A theater-in-the-round's last, unplanned headline

The Front Row Theater opened in Highland Heights in 1974, a $3 million, 3,200-seat theater-in-the-round with a rotating stage designed so no seat had an obstructed view; over nineteen years it hosted acts from Aretha Franklin and James Brown to Willie Nelson, Bill Cosby, and George Carlin. On December 4, 1988, Roy Orbison played a concert there that became, without anyone in the audience knowing it, the last of his career -- he died of a heart attack two days later. The theater itself did not long outlast him: it merged with the Playhouse Square Foundation and closed in June 1993 after a closing run by Luther Vandross, and the building came down in 1995, replaced by a Home Depot.

From a plank road to underground wires

Highland Heights's connection to Cleveland was, for its first century, a matter of roads and rails: an 1877 plank road ran through Mayfield Township along the route of today's Mayfield Road, and by 1899 the Cleveland & Eastern interurban line linked the area to the city and on to Chardon. The farm township stayed thinly settled long after that -- 762 people as late as 1950 -- until postwar subdivision building nearly quadrupled the population within a decade. When Highland Heights did build out, it set a regional precedent: it became the first city in Cuyahoga County to require that new residential neighborhoods bury their utility wiring and install ornamental lamp posts, a small planning choice that shaped how its newer streets still look today.

56,914 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
