How Washington Township, Paulding County began
Washington Township, one of forty-three townships of that name in Ohio, sits in the southeast corner of Paulding County bordering Putnam and Van Wert counties. It was not among the four Paulding County townships organized by 1842. It has no incorporated village; Mandale in the southeast and Roselms in the southwest are its unincorporated communities. The Findlay, Fort Wayne & Western railroad crossed it from about 1888 until its rails were pulled up in 1919, Roselms had a post office from 1878 to 1906 and Mandale from 1892 to 1930, and a tornado struck Roselms on November 10, 2002. The township counted 663 residents in 2020.

Stories
Plumbs Cross Roads and Roselms
The southwest corner of Washington Township had a post office from January 28, 1878, called Plumbs Cross Roads. In 1892 the Post Office Department renamed it Roselms, on June 13. In the same year Mandale, on the Findlay, Fort Wayne & Western, got its own office, and the railroad station list notes there was no depot at Mandale; passengers waited in Murphy's Store at the crossing of the track and State Route 66, a store that burned in 1918. Roselms lost its post office on June 14, 1906, and its mail went to Grover Hill; Mandale's office ended in 1930. The rails that had made both stops were lifted in 1919.
November 10, 2002
On the afternoon of November 10, 2002, a violent tornado crossed Van Wert, Ohio, destroying 43 homes and five businesses, including the Twin Cinemas, where the manager had moved some 60 patrons to interior hallways minutes before the building collapsed. The storm continued northeast into Paulding County, where it struck Roselms with a nine-mile F3 track and left only one structure standing in the small crossroads community. It went on through Putnam County and lifted near Malinta about 4:25 p.m. The Wikipedia accounts credit Van Wert's warning system with saving many lives, and the storm caused more than $30 million in damage overall.
