How Perry Township, Putnam County began
Perry Township, in western Putnam County, was the first township organized within present-day Putnam County, dating from 1828 -- six years before the county itself organized -- and named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, the naval hero of the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie. Robert Wallen, who settled near the junction of the Auglaize and Blanchard rivers in 1819, was its first settler. It holds the villages of Dupont in its north and Cloverdale in its south, plus the vanished early town of Franconia, once the township's first settlement.
Settled 1819, incorporated 1828 (organized), by Robert Wallen, first settler.
Where the name comes from
Named for Oliver Hazard Perry, the naval commander who defeated the British fleet at the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813, during the War of 1812; one of twenty-six Perry Townships in Ohio.

- — Dupont, in the township's north, is platted when the Toledo, Delphos, and Indianapolis Railway is extended to the site.
- — Cloverdale, originally called Evansville, is platted in the township's south when the railroad reaches the site.
- — Dupont incorporates as an Ohio village.
- — Cascade is platted by E. W. Dimmick for Charles Andrews on the west bank of the Auglaize river, at the site of Myers' Mill, the first mill built in the county by early settler Samuel Myers.
- — Cloverdale incorporates as an Ohio village under its present name.
Stories
A Road Supervisor Who Thought His District Was the Whole County
Dimmit Mackrill, elected the township's first constable in 1828, later served as road supervisor for Perry Township -- but in 1832, for reasons the county's historian could not explain, he apparently believed his authority extended over the entire county. He notified every man living along the Blanchard river, from its mouth all the way to the Hancock County line, to report for road work on a specified day on the south side of the Auglaize river. Some of the summoned settlers showed up; others, presumably confused or skeptical, did not. Whatever the truth behind Mackrill's mistake, the pioneers who did turn out did valiant work improving the road that day -- a small story preserved, the historian noted dryly, mainly because it happened to be true.
Franconia's Rise and Disappearance
Long before Dupont or Cloverdale existed, Franconia was Perry Township's town. Laid out by Amos Kendall in 1837, it grew into a flourishing little trade center: Parlee Carlin ran the first store, and a double log cabin built by early settler Sebastian Shroufe -- later profiled by the historian Henry Howe as a "Home in the Wilderness" -- served for years afterward as a tavern under P. B. Holden. But Franconia's moment passed. By the time Putnam County's history was written in 1915, the town had "long since disappeared," its site absorbed back into the township's farmland, remembered only as the first of several towns -- Dupont, Cascade, Cloverdale and Huntstown among them -- that rose and in some cases fell again along Perry Township's rivers and rail lines.
