How Medina began

Medina was laid out under the working name "Mecca" by Connecticut Land Company proprietor Elijah Boardman, who saw it as the destination of a Yankee pilgrimage west; an existing Mecca Township in Trumbull County forced a rename, and the settlers kept the Arabian theme with Medina, the city where Muhammad is buried. Boardman deeded the public square to the county on November 30, 1818, securing Medina's place as seat of the newly organizing Medina County. Two catastrophic fires, in 1848 and 1870, each leveled most of its business district; the 1870 rebuilding under banker and former mayor Harrison Gray Blake gave Medina Square its lasting Victorian brick storefronts, now a nine-block historic district around Public Square. The town's best-known 19th-century industry, Amos Root's beekeeping-supply company founded in 1869, still operates from the city; Medina incorporated as a village in 1835 and chartered as a city in 1952.

Where the name comes from

Proprietor Elijah Boardman originally called the settlement Mecca, intending it as the final destination of a Yankee pilgrimage west, but an existing Mecca Township in Trumbull County forced a change; the new name, Medina, kept the same Arabian-pilgrimage theme, honoring the city where the prophet Muhammad is buried. A minority tradition instead traces the name to a Medina in New York State, though no evidence connects the two founding populations.

Before the town

No Native village, mound, trail or documented encounter site specific to the platted town of Medina turned up in the sources we found; the town was laid out in 1818, six years after Medina County organized and thirteen after the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry opened the area to settlement. Elsewhere in the county, the record includes the Paleo Crossing Clovis-era site in Sharon Township and the one specific, dated Native encounter we found -- Potawatomi hunters meeting a squatter in Liverpool Township in 1810.

Timeline

Stories

Two Fires, and a Square Rebuilt in Brick

Medina's downtown burned to the ground twice within a generation. On April 11, 1848, fire consumed the entire business district while residents fought it with nothing more than bucket brigades over roughly four hours; remarkably no one died, but the town still had no organized fire department when disaster struck again. On April 14, 1870, a fire that started in a barbershop's wooden building destroyed 45 structures, leaving almost nothing standing of the commercial core except two blocks. It took repeated warnings and seven more years before the village council finally authorized $3,000 in bonds to buy a fire engine, in 1877. In the meantime, Harrison Gray Blake -- a former mayor and local banker -- oversaw roughly a decade of reconstruction around Medina Square in a Victorian style, giving the square the brick storefronts, Town Hall and Engine House that survive today as the core of a nine-block historic district.

A Stagecoach, Two Fugitives, and a Fabricated Theft

In 1835, a stagecoach carrying two enslaved women and two Native American men passed through Medina; one of the women was the daughter of then-vice-presidential candidate Richard Mentor Johnson and Julia Chinn, an enslaved woman he had lived with openly for years. Johnson's nephew pursued the group into Medina, claiming ownership of the women and alleging that they had stolen a $1,000 bank check. Three local attorneys volunteered to represent the travelers, but the women were ultimately released to the nephew's custody for trial in Kentucky. A later investigation found the theft allegation had been fabricated from the start, invented to guarantee the women's return to enslavement rather than to recover any actual stolen property -- a small, sharply documented episode of the machinery of the Fugitive Slave era passing directly through a Western Reserve county seat otherwise known for beekeeping supplies and courthouse fires.

The Home of the Honey Bees

In 1869, Amos Ives Root, a Medina jeweler with a growing fascination for beekeeping, founded what became the A.I. Root Company to manufacture hives, comb foundation and other beekeeping equipment. The business grew steadily through the late 1800s -- by 1886 it employed 97 workers, already Medina's largest employer -- and outlasted nearly every other industry the small Western Reserve county seat ever hosted, including its brief run as a match-manufacturing rival to nearby Wadsworth. A 1925 postcard advertised the firm simply as "the home of the honey bees," and the company Root founded remains headquartered in Medina today, one of the oldest continuously operating beekeeping-supply manufacturers in the country.
