How Montville Township, Medina County began

Montville Township, the central township of Medina County, was Township 0, Range 14 in the Connecticut Land Company's survey and was sold to General Aristarchus Champion, who had it surveyed in sections in 1818 and, according to the county timeline, named it for Montville, Vermont. Austin Badger, a young surveyor's helper from New York, was the first to take up land there that year, and he and Parker Pelton, Samuel Brown and Philo Welton were among the 1819 settlers; the township was organized in 1820. The 1881 county history says no village has found a location in the township except the southern extension of Medina. Rocky River rises in its southeast and a water-divide in the south separates its flow from the Ohio-bound waters of the Styx. The township partly surrounds Medina and had 13,131 residents in 2020.

Settled 1818 (General Aristarchus Champion purchases the township), incorporated 1820 (formally organized as a township), by General Aristarchus Champion.

Where the name comes from

The township was named after Montville, Vermont, a town of high rolling land where the original proprietor, General Aristarchus Champion, had lived; the territory had been known in the Connecticut Land Company's survey as Township Range 14 before Champion bought and subdivided it for settlement starting in 1818. A second Ohio township of the same name exists in Geauga County.

Before the town

The 1881 county history says the Indians had 'long before abandoned this country as a place of residence' and that the surveyors of 1818 found here and there evidences of abandoned camps, though none in this section; a considerable camp of Indians, supporting themselves by hunting and fishing, was located to the westward on the Chippewa River (the Lafayette Township lake country) but stayed only a short time, and few of the pioneers' children ever saw one. No mound or village is recorded in the township. The land was opened to settlement by the Treaty of Fort Industry (1805). A Potawatomi encounter is recorded in Liverpool Township in 1810.

Timeline

  1. — The Connecticut Land Company buys the Western Reserve tract that includes the future Montville Township, then surveyed as Township Range 14.
  2. — General Aristarchus Champion buys the township and begins dividing it into sections for settlement.
  3. — Austin Badger and Alonzo Hickox, young men from Genesee County, New York, reach Weymouth after walking and sailing west; Badger joins Abram Frieze's survey of Montville and is promised first choice of lands.
  4. — Austin Badger puts up a small log cabin; Samuel Brown takes 160 acres, Parker Pelton buys a lot from Badger's contract at $1 an acre, and Philo Welton, Thomas Currier, Amasa Smith, Seth Hoyt, John Lawrence and Joseph Pimlot settle; the township's families come mostly from Connecticut stock.
  5. — Montville Township formally organizes, named for Champion's former home of Montville, Vermont.
  6. — Badger brings the first lumber into the township, hauled from Bagdad; the first frame buildings follow, a house for Mr. Welton and a barn for George F. Atherton.
  7. — Austin Badger builds a log sawmill on Rocky River for John Morris, with a stone dam; it burns about two years later when a settler running it at night leaves the fire improperly banked.
  8. — A mill is built at Weymouth in Medina Township; the settlers of Montville also take wheat to the Wadsworth mill, whose overshot wheel is turned by two springs.
  9. — Woods remain a terror to new settlers; William Warner is said to have killed the last deer in the county, one shot just north of the swamp land in La Fayette Township.
  10. — A Safety Services building opens in the township to house police, fire and emergency personnel.
  11. — Montville Township has 13,131 residents.

Stories

A young man with a knapsack

In the spring of 1818 two unmarried young men from Genesee County, New York, Austin Badger, twenty-four, and Alonzo Hickox, packed their goods in knapsacks and set out for the Western Reserve, partly by open boat on Lake Erie until head winds drove them ashore at Cattaraugus Creek. They walked on to Erie, took a schooner to Ashtabula, and followed the old State road, reaching Weymouth on May 10. Hickox had a brother at Wooster, so they went on there; Badger, finding nothing, came back to Medina, where the land agent R. Ferris, learning he had little money, offered him a job with Abram Frieze, who was surveying Montville for General Champion. Following blazed trees, he found the survey party, took the place of a helper who was tired of the work, and was paid with the privilege of first choice of lands. He chose lots in the southeast of the township, took a contract to clear what is now the square in Medina, put up a cabin in 1819, and went to Euclid for a wife. The county history of 1881 tells this as the township's beginning.

Mrs. Albro and the snake

Rattlesnakes were so common among Montville's early settlers that the 1881 county history says they had to be watched for constantly and kept out of the house, and that it was years before they were exterminated. One story concerns the child who later became Mrs. J. H. Albro, whose family noticed her carrying a cup of milk out of the house every day without attention at first. One day she was found holding the cup for a large snake to drink from, patting the reptile's head while it did. The practice was ended at once. The story appears among the county historian's accounts of the township's wildlife, with wolves that never attacked people and bears seen only occasionally.
