Life story

Lucien Lucius Nunn was born in Medina, Ohio, in 1853. He went to Oberlin College and then Harvard Law School.

In 1880 he moved to Telluride, Colorado, where he practiced law and invested in real estate, mining, newspapers and banking. With George Westinghouse he built the Ames Hydroelectric Generating Plant, described as the world's first alternating-current plant used for industry.

Later he turned to education. He founded the Telluride Institute, a work-study program that grew into the Telluride Association at Cornell and other schools, and in 1917 he founded Deep Springs College, a small two-year school built on student labor, study and self-government.

He died of tuberculosis in Los Angeles in 1925 and is buried at Forest Lawn in Glendale, California. Both his schools still operate.
