How Medina Township, Medina County began
Medina Township, laid out under the working name Mecca in 1818 before the county seat within it took the substitute name Medina, is considered the oldest organized government in Medina County. When the village of Medina incorporated in 1835 it was carved partly out of the township's land, and the township has surrounded the growing city ever since, supplying the county's earliest church, first school and first recorded marriage. Two of the township's farmhouses, the Burritt Blakslee House and the Jacob Gayer House, are individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it remains a mostly residential township of about 9,000 people contracting with the City of Medina for fire and emergency services.
Settled 1814 (Zenas Hamilton, first permanent settler, arrives in October), platted 1810 (township surveyed into 81 lots), incorporated 1818 (formally organized; considered the oldest organized government in Medina County), by Elijah Boardman, Connecticut Land Company proprietor (owner from 1795); Zenas Hamilton, first permanent settler.
Where the name comes from
Like the city of Medina within it, the township's name traces to proprietor Elijah Boardman's original choice of "Mecca," changed to Medina -- another Arabian holy city, Muhammad's burial place -- after a naming conflict with an existing Mecca Township in Trumbull County. It is the only Medina Township in Ohio.
Before the town
No Native village, mound, trail or documented encounter site specific to Medina Township turned up in the sources we checked; the township was surveyed in 1810 and settled from 1814, after the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry opened Medina County to settlement, though local histories record that fear of Native attack during the War of 1812 drove off at least one early cabin-builder (Hinman) before permanent settlement resumed. The county-level history file carries the fuller treaty context and the one specific, dated Native encounter located in the county -- Potawatomi hunters meeting a squatter in Liverpool Township in 1810.

Stories
The Cabin Abandoned to Fear
The first attempt to settle Medina Township came in 1810, when the land had only recently been surveyed into 81 lots and a man named Hinman raised the township's first cabin. He did not stay in it. As war with Britain loomed and rumors of Native raids spread through the scattered Western Reserve settlements, Hinman abandoned the cabin rather than risk his family on an isolated claim, and it would be four more years -- after the worst of the War of 1812's frontier violence had passed -- before Zenas Hamilton arrived from New York in October 1814 to become the township's first settler to actually stay. Hamilton's own son, Matthew, born the following June, was the first child born in the township and grew up to become a doctor; within a handful of years the family that had dared what Hinman would not helped found the township's first church, first school and first county seat all inside a single decade.
