How Liverpool Township, Medina County began
Liverpool Township holds the earliest claim to settlement anywhere in Medina County: Seba Bronson Jr., a Revolutionary War veteran, squatted in the Rocky River lowlands near present Valley City in 1810 -- before the township's 1816 formal organization -- planted corn, built a salt works, and met Potawatomi people who came to hunt the area. The salt works became the county's first corporate business, and a laborer drilling for more brine struck oil at 90 feet in 1812, one of the county's earliest oil discoveries. The township likely took its name from Liverpool, England, itself a center of the English salt trade, an apt echo of the local industry. Today its census-designated place, Valley City, calls itself the Frog Jump Capital of Ohio after an annual contest running since 1962.

One historical account suggests the township was named for Liverpool, England, then a major center of the English salt trade -- a fitting echo of Liverpool Township's own early salt works at Hardscrabble. Before the town
Liverpool Township holds the one specifically located, dated Native encounter documented anywhere in Medina County in the sources we checked: after squatter Seba Bronson Jr. settled in the Rocky River lowlands near Hardscrabble (modern Grafton and Columbia roads) in 1810 and began working a salt spring there, the county's bicentennial timeline records that he met Potawatomi people who came to the area to hunt. No village, camp or burial site is named in connection with this encounter, and no source located gives further detail on the Potawatomi band involved or how long they continued to use the area after settlement began. The county-level history file carries the fuller treaty context: Medina County, lying west of the Cuyahoga River, remained outside the 1795 Treaty of Greenville cession and only opened to settlement after the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry, in which the Potawatomi were among the signing nations alongside the Wyandot, Ottawa, Chippewa, Munsee/Delaware and Shawnee.

Salt, Then Oil, From the Same Ground
Liverpool Township's first industry began almost by accident. Squatter Seba Bronson Jr. had settled the Hardscrabble lowlands along the Rocky River in 1810 hoping to farm, but the salt spring on his claim proved more valuable than his corn. By 1812, Justus Warner and Moses Deming had acquired rights to the spring, hauled iron kettles overland from Canton, and put the Liverpool Salt Works into business -- Medina County's first corporate enterprise, supplying customers across the region until the Erie Canal made shipped-in salt cheaper. While drilling deeper for more brine that same year, a laborer working for Deming struck a thick black substance at 90 feet instead. Not knowing what to do with it, the crew shoveled the unwanted oil into barrels and shipped it to Cleveland as an unrefined lubricant -- one of the first recorded oil strikes in Medina County, treated at the time as a nuisance rather than a fortune.
The Frog Jump Capital of Ohio
In 1962, residents of Valley City decided their small township deserved a summer tradition, and modeled one on Mark Twain's story of a Calaveras County jumping-frog contest. The local competition caught on fast enough that Governor Jim Rhodes proclaimed it Ohio's official state frog jumping championship on April 2, 1964, and by 1969 Valley City's own champion frogs were traveling to compete at the original Calaveras County contest in California. More than six decades later the tradition still draws a crowd: the 2021 event at Mill Stream Park brought out more than 750 frogs and roughly 4,000 spectators, giving a farming township whose first fame rested on salt and oil a second, considerably lighter claim as the Frog Jump Capital of Ohio.
