Life story

Marcus Alonzo Hanna was born in Lisbon, Ohio, in 1837, and his family moved to Cleveland in 1852. He went to school with John D. Rockefeller and briefly attended Western Reserve College.

He married Charlotte Rhodes in 1864 and joined her father's coal and iron firm, which became Rhodes and Company. It grew into a large Great Lakes business, and he added newspaper and other holdings.

He turned to politics full time in 1895 to promote William McKinley, and as Republican National Committee chairman in 1896 he ran McKinley's winning campaign.

Appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1897, he was elected on his own in 1898 and stayed until his death in 1904. His daughter Ruth Hanna McCormick later served in Congress too.
