How Hills And Dales began
Hills and Dales is a planned residential village in Jackson Township on the northwest edge of Canton. The T. K. Harris Company took title to a 202-acre farm on October 9, 1922, and the planning commission accepted its plans on September 13, 1923; the developers named it for the rolling terrain. By the end of 1924 about thirty home sites had been sold and seven houses were under way, many designed by Cleveland and Pittsburgh architects in English Tudor, Georgian, Normandy and Colonial styles. The village has its own mayor, council and police, has been part of the Plain Local School District since 1955, and had 250 residents in 2020.

Where the name comes from
The name Hills and Dales was coined by property developers to describe the rolling terrain of the town site, a marketing-style name rather than one honoring a person or earlier place.
Before the town
No Native village, mound or treaty site specific to Hills and Dales is documented in the sources consulted. The village lies in Jackson Township east of the Tuscarawas River. Land east of the Tuscarawas River had its Native title extinguished by the Treaty of Fort McIntosh in 1785, a boundary confirmed at Greenville in 1795, according to the 1881 county history.

Selling Hills and Dales
After its 1924 selling season the T. K. Harris Company printed a sixteen-page booklet to sell the rest of the lots. It reported that more than thirty home sites had been sold in the first year and that seven houses were built or nearly finished, and it pictured them: residences for C. F. Kaufholz by Cleveland architect Abram Garfield, for John C. Keplinger and Dr. J. C. McConkey by Albrecht & Wilhelm of Cleveland, for Judge William B. Quinn by Charles E. Firestone of Canton, and for C. H. Schlabach by Bartholomew & Smith of Pittsburgh. The company said development had been finished before a single lot was sold, that lots ran from three-quarters of an acre to three acres under deed restrictions, and that fewer than eighty remained. It described three approaches, including one through the grounds of Brookside Country Club, and noted that no public transportation reached the village, so residents relied on their own automobiles. Dunkeith Drive was named as the main street.
