How Brush Creek Township, Scioto County began
Brush Creek Township, in western Scioto County along the Adams County line, had inhabitants before 1800 though it was not formally organized until 1820. Its best-preserved landmark is the Otway Covered Bridge, a 127-foot Smith-truss span built in 1874 by the Smith Bridge Company of Toledo over Scioto Brush Creek, still standing just north of the village of Otway in the township's northeast; bypassed by traffic since 1961, it has been maintained by the Otway Historical Society and was repaired after tornado damage in 2012. The Irish Catholic farming hamlet of Comstock once straddled the township's border with Union Township. Its 2020 population was 1,061.
Settled before 1800, incorporated 1820.

Stories
A bridge that outlived its own traffic
The Smith Bridge Company of Toledo built the Otway Covered Bridge in 1874, a 127-foot timber truss carrying travelers over Scioto Brush Creek on what became Route 348. It did that ordinary job for the better part of a century before being bypassed and closed to vehicles in 1961, at which point most covered bridges in its position simply rot away or come down for scrap timber. This one didn't: the Otway Historical Society took it on, kept it standing through the 1974 National Register listing, and rebuilt its roof after a March 2012 tornado tore through, finishing the repair with a federal grant in 2014 and winning a state preservation award for the work the following year. It stands today less as active infrastructure than as a maintained monument — a 19th-century bridge kept alive specifically because a local historical society decided it was worth the trouble.
