How Madison Township, Scioto County began

Madison Township, in the northeastern corner of Scioto County, was settled as early as 1797 and formally organized in 1810, taking its name from President James Madison. It never grew an incorporated town of its own; instead the township scattered into small farming-and-postal hamlets, several founded by identifiable immigrant families — Scottish settlers Laughlin and Margaret Noble founded Nairn around 1850, naming it for Margaret's hometown in Scotland — nearly all of which lost their post offices by the early 1900s and are remembered today only in local ghost-town records. Minford, straddling the Harrison Township line, and Mule Town in the southwest are its modern population centers. Its 2020 population was 3,887.

Settled 1797, incorporated 1810, by named for President James Madison.

Stories

A Scottish namesake on the Scioto County line

Sometime around 1850, Scottish immigrants Laughlin and Margaret Noble settled in Madison Township and gave their new hamlet a name from home: Nairn, after Margaret's own town on Scotland's Moray Firth. The post office they helped establish ran for more than half a century, until 1902, longer than most of the township's small hamlets managed — Brushy Fork's office lasted a decade, Ryon's twelve years, Lois's more than twenty — before rural free delivery and consolidating farms emptied them out one by one. Nothing incorporated ever grew at Nairn; like nearly every other named place in Madison Township, it survives now only as a name on old maps and in local ghost-town records, one Scottish farm family's small act of homesickness outlasting the settlement itself.
