How Morgan Township, Scioto County began

Morgan Township, in northwestern Scioto County, was formed from parts of Seal and Union townships and organized on June 7, 1825, with 22 square miles, and named for early settler Thomas Morgan. It was first settled around 1800 on the Scioto River and on Bear Creek near its mouth by John and William Devers, Thomas Morgan, the Glazes, Shelpmans, Cutlers and Noels, with a separate settlement of Murphys, Walls, McCullochs and Corbleys; the Scioto bottoms and lower Bear Creek are among the best farmland in the county. It holds no incorporated town; Sedan on Upper Bear Creek is its best-known community. Its 2,232 residents (2020) live in a township 30.2 square miles in area, bordered by Camp Creek and Scioto townships in Pike County to the north.

Settled c. 1800, incorporated 1825-06-07, by John and William Devers, Thomas Morgan, Abraham and Isaac Glaze, David and Spicer Shelpman, Pliny and Joshua Cutler and Aaron Noel; township formed from Seal and Union townships.

Where the name comes from

Named for Thomas Morgan, an early settler on the Scioto River and Bear Creek; the 1903 county history states the name directly. It is one of six Morgan Townships in Ohio.

Before the town

No Native site or event specific to Morgan Township was found. The township lies on the Scioto River and in the land ceded by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville, but the 1903 county history's Morgan chapter mentions no Native people.

Stories

Oil seeps and mineral springs on Bear Creek

Morgan Township sits on rough hill country broken by Bear Creek and the broad bottoms of the Scioto, where, the 1903 county historian wrote, 'no better land is found in the county.' But the township also had petroleum springs at several places, and at three places natural gas was struck while boring for oil. A number of mineral springs resembled the Blue Lick Springs of Kentucky, some freestone was quarried and small quantities of coal were dug. Corn was the main crop, wheat grew on the highlands and fruit on the hills, and a good part of the business of the township was in timber and railroad cross ties. The records of the township's first election have been lost, the historian noted, and 'nothing of consequence is recorded prior to 1880.'
