How Otway began
Otway, in the northeast corner of Brush Creek Township, takes its name from Thomas Otway, a 17th-century English dramatist, an unusual literary namesake for a rural Ohio hamlet. A post office has operated there since 1861, but the village itself was not platted until March 29, 1884, and incorporated in 1890. Its economy once ran on the Norfolk and Western rail line between Portsmouth and Cincinnati, whose depot served the village until 1956. Just north of town, the 1874 Otway Covered Bridge still spans Scioto Brush Creek. Otway's population has fallen from a peak of 289 in 1920 to 92 at the 2020 census.
Settled 1861 (post office), platted 1884-03-29, incorporated 1890.

Stories
A dramatist's name on a Scioto County hamlet
Whoever named this village for Thomas Otway — a 17th-century English playwright best remembered for the tragedy Venice Preserv'd, and dead more than a century before Ohio was a state — left no explanation that survives in the sources consulted. What is documented is more mundane and more typical of the county: a post office from 1861, a formal plat only in 1884, incorporation in 1890, and a Norfolk and Western depot that kept trains between Portsmouth and Cincinnati stopping here until service needs shrank enough by 1956 that the depot building became a convenience store instead. The village peaked at 289 people in 1920 and has fallen to a third of that since; its one surviving 19th-century landmark, the 1874 covered bridge just north of town, has outlasted the rail line that once made Otway worth a stop.

48,598 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
