How Sugar Creek Township, Wayne County began

Sugar Creek Township was one of Wayne County's original four townships, organized in 1812 along with Wooster, Mohican and Prairie townships. James Goudy, the township's first settler, built a lumber mill on Sugar Creek in its northeast in 1808, and a road cut through the forest between 1808 and 1810 connected Canton to Wooster through the township. Its most distinctive community is Kidron, in the southwest, founded in 1819 as Sonnenberg by Swiss Mennonites from the Jura Mountains region near Bern who were fleeing religious persecution and agricultural hardship; the settlement later took the name Kidron and remains a center of Wayne County's Mennonite community today.

Settled 1808 (James Goudy, first settler), incorporated 1812 (one of Wayne County's original four townships).

Where the name comes from

Named for Sugar Creek, the stream running through the township's northeast where first settler James Goudy built his mill.

Before the town

No Native American village, trail, mound or treaty event specific to Sugar Creek Township was found in the sources checked. Across Wayne County, the wider record includes the Delaware, Wyandot and Shawnee presence and three Native trails recorded crossing the county generally.

Timeline

  1. — James Goudy becomes the township's first settler, building a lumber mill on Sugar Creek in the northeast.
  2. — A road is cut through forest connecting Canton to Wooster, passing through the township.
  3. — Sugar Creek Township is formally organized as one of Wayne County's original four townships, alongside Wooster, Mohican and Prairie.
  4. — The Church of Sugar Creek is organized.
  5. — Dover village, later absorbed into Dalton, is surveyed in the township's north.
  6. — Swiss Mennonites from the Sonnenberg area near Bern, Switzerland found the settlement of Sonnenberg in the township's southwest, later renamed Kidron.
  7. — A post office is established at Dover.
  8. — Sugarcreek Township is organized, April 11, the same day as Wooster, Mohican and Prairie townships. John Kenney and John Goudy are the township's first settlers, followed by John and James Goudy, then Peter Cox, Samuel Cook, William Homan and Rev. James Adams, the locality's first preacher.
  9. — William Goudy and Sarah Bates are probably the first couple married in the township. Around 1823-24, William Goudy builds the township's first gristmill, a log structure with one run of stone burrs, with neighbors helping dig the millrace.
  10. — Moscow, a village laid out by Joseph H. Larwill, Josiah Crawford and John Larwill, April 16, is surrounded at first with what the county history calls "great expectations" that are never realized.

Stories

The quiet people of the Jura Mountains, resettled in Wayne County

In 1819, families of Swiss Mennonites left the Sonnenberg district near the Jura Mountains outside Bern, Switzerland, where generations of religious persecution and dwindling farmland had made life increasingly difficult for a people locally known as 'the quiet people in the country.' They settled in the southwest corner of Sugar Creek Township and named their new home Sonnenberg after the district they had left behind; the settlement later took the name Kidron instead. Two centuries later Kidron remains a center of Mennonite life in Wayne County, home to Central Christian School, a K-12 institution run under the Ohio Conference of the Mennonite Church. The town's quiet obscurity was broken in a 2009 episode of the television series 24, which depicted a fictional terrorist attack on a much larger 'Kidron, Ohio' than the actual census-designated place of under 1,000 residents.
