How Dalton began
Dalton was formed in 1855 by the consolidation of three rival neighboring villages in Sugar Creek Township: Dover, established 1817; Sharon, established around 1817-28; and Middletown, established 1828. Rather than one settlement simply outgrowing the others, three separately platted communities merged into a single village under a new name. Dalton's population grew nearly fivefold from 412 residents in 1870 to 1,927 by 2020.
Settled 1817 (as Dover), incorporated 1856-08-14, by Rev. James Adams (Dover, 1817); unnamed proprietors (Sharon, 1828); Jacob Switzer and John Jameson (Middletown, 1828).
Where the name comes from
Dalton was formed from three earlier, adjoining plats: Dover, surveyed October 16, 1817, by A. Porter for Rev. James Adams (46 lots); Sharon, surveyed March 29, 1828, by C. W. Christmas (30 lots); and Middletown, laid out by Jacob Switzer and John Jameson and surveyed December 27, 1828, by William Henderson (54 in-lots and 11 out-lots). When the three ceased to exist as separate entities, the combined village of Dalton was incorporated August 14, 1856; the 1878 county history does not explain why the name Dalton in particular was chosen for the merged village.

Stories
Three villages become one
Dalton did not grow up as a single settlement; it was assembled in 1855 out of three separately founded, rival villages that had stood near one another in Sugar Creek Township for decades. Dover and Sharon both dated to around 1817, and Middletown followed in 1828, and each presumably had its own store, church and sense of identity before their residents agreed to merge into one incorporated village under a new name. No source consulted explains what drove the consolidation or why 'Dalton' was chosen over any of the three original names, but the result outlasted all three: by 1870 the merged village counted 412 residents, and it has grown steadily ever since, reaching 1,927 by the 2020 census.

48,654 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
