How Apple Creek began
Apple Creek, in East Union Township, takes its name from the nearby stream and has been home to a large Old Order Amish community since the mid-1800s. Recorded with 300 residents at the 1870 census, the village grew to 1,188 by 2020, part of the broader Amish-country settlement pattern that runs through southern Wayne County into neighboring Holmes County.

A station village grows up on John Hindman's land
The 1878 county history describes Applecreek Station as a village "of more recent date" than its neighbor Edinburg, a growth of the Cleveland, Mt. Vernon and Columbus railroad. Andrew Woodruff, a blacksmith, put up the first house after the village was laid out; John Hindman, who owned the land the village was built on, and Elisha Numbers built the next two houses. George Core opened the first hotel, on the Driesbach corner, and David Clark, later of Wooster, opened the first dry-goods store. The village's post office had earlier been at Edinburg, a mile or so away, before moving to Applecreek Station once the railroad made it the busier point; Edinburg's own postmasters, starting with its first storekeeper Ira Pratt, are recorded back to the 1830s.
