How Springdale began

Springdale's clearest surviving link to its 19th-century past is the Becker House, a simple two-story weatherboarded farmhouse Joseph Hough built on his 63-acre property in 1830. After Hough's death in the early 1850s the house passed to John Burgoyne Jr., whose father, Judge John Burgoyne Sr. of the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas, lived there from 1860 to 1864; the elder Burgoyne had already drawn national attention by ruling the federal Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 unconstitutional. Springdale stayed a small rural crossroads through the 19th century, with just 382 residents recorded in 1870, and did not grow into a Cincinnati suburb until the second half of the 20th century, jumping from 3,556 residents in 1960 to 8,127 by 1970 and reaching 11,007 by 2020.

Where the name comes from

No source consulted gives a documented origin for the name "Springdale"; it is a common, generic American place name evoking a valley with springs.

Stories

A farmhouse that outlived a fugitive-slave ruling

Joseph Hough's 1830 farmhouse was, by design, unremarkable -- a plain two-story weatherboarded house with a porch running the width of its three-bay front, typical of the working farms that filled Hamilton County's countryside in the early 19th century. It became notable only by association, decades after Hough's death: the family who inherited it, the Burgoynes, included John Burgoyne Sr., a judge on the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas who had already made national news by ruling that the federal Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 -- the law requiring free states to help capture and return escaped enslaved people -- was unconstitutional, in a case that drew attention well beyond Ohio's borders in the tense years before the Civil War. Burgoyne lived in the farmhouse from 1860 to 1864, through the war's opening years, and the plain house he occupied is the only building left in Springdale carrying that history forward; it remains the city's sole listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Springdale, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

44,450 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-02): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-02 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
