How South Russell began
South Russell sits within historic Russell Township, first settled in 1818 by Gideon Russell and his family and named Russell in 1827; neighbors had called the area 'West Woods.' The village split from the rest of the township and incorporated on its own in 1923, the last village in Geauga County to do so. A local history quoted by the Geauga Maple Leaf traces the split to a controversy over consolidating the township's nine one-room schools.
Settled 1818 (Gideon Russell and family, first inhabitants of what became Russell Township), incorporated Russell Township organized and named 1827; South Russell village incorporated separately, 1923, by Gideon Russell.
Where the name comes from
South Russell takes its name from Russell Township, itself named in 1827 for Gideon Russell, who had settled there with his family in 1818. Before that formal naming the area was known informally among neighbors as 'West Woods.'
Before the town
No source identifies a specific, named Native American village, mound, or treaty site within Russell Township or South Russell. The area, part of the Chagrin River watershed in the northeastern Connecticut Western Reserve, lay within the range of the Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot and other nations before the Treaty of Greenville (1795) and settlement in 1818.
Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot.

Stories
A village made by a school fight
South Russell is the youngest village in Geauga County, and a local history, as the Geauga Maple Leaf reports it, traces its beginning to a quarrel over schools. Russell Township had nine one-room schools, and a controversy over consolidating them in the 1920s led the southern part of the township to split off and form its own village; the village's centennial celebration in 2023 and Wikipedia mark the founding as 1923, while the township history article places the school dispute in 1925. The township itself was the last in Geauga County to be organized, in 1827, and neighbors in Newbury had called it the West Woods. What changed it most, a local historian says, was transportation in the 1900s, first the interurban railroad that ran from South Russell through Chardon and Hiram and separated South Russell from Bainbridge Township, then the automobile, which made Russell a bedroom community. The village had 141 people in 1930 and 3,972 in 2020, and its mayor in 2023 attributed its appeal to its 'limited government.'

Mostly estimated. Only 5% of these days come from a gauge standing inside South Russell - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.
48,873 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
