How Saybrook Township, Ashtabula County began
Saybrook Township, on Lake Erie between Ashtabula and Geneva, was first settled in February 1810 by fifteen-year-old George Webster and his widowed mother, and organized in 1816 under the name Wrightsburg for early landowner Josiah Wright -- itself a renaming of an even earlier informal name, Mathertown, after proprietor Samuel Mather. In 1827 the township took the name Saybrook, after the Connecticut colonial town, making it the only Saybrook Township in Ohio. It grew as a farming community along two glacial ridges, with sawmills, a schoolhouse by 1815, and a Methodist church organized the following year, and today includes the Saybrook-on-the-Lake community along the shoreline.

Where the name comes from
The township was first known informally as Mathertown, for early proprietor Samuel Mather, then organized in 1816 as Wrightsburg, for Josiah and Samuel Wright of Pownal, Vermont, who had bought nearly the whole township from William Hart in 1811. In 1827 it was renamed Saybrook, after Saybrook, Connecticut, reflecting the township's Connecticut Western Reserve origins; it is the only township of that name in Ohio.

A fifteen-year-old's cabin on the west line
In February 1810, George Webster arrived in what would become Saybrook Township from Delaware County, New York, bringing along his widowed mother. He was fifteen years old. The journey west had been hard: the pair traveled through dense, largely trackless forest, and at one point had to cross Ashtabula Creek, a crossing the 1878 county history records they managed only with the help of a local widow, Mrs. Beckwith, who lived nearby. Webster built a cabin about sixty rods -- roughly a thousand feet -- east of the township's western line and became its first permanent white settler, ahead of the land's actual owners, Josiah and Samuel Wright of Pownal, Vermont, who did not buy the township outright from Connecticut Land Company investor William Hart until the following year. Other families followed quickly: Joseph Hotchkiss from New York later that same year, then Zadoc Brown from Massachusetts in 1811, and by 1816 a wave of settlers from Pownal, Vermont, had made the Wrights' hometown connection the township's dominant thread -- a pattern repeated across the Western Reserve, where a single land company's home community often reseeded itself onto an Ohio township one family at a time.
