How Austinburg Township, Ashtabula County began
Judge Eliphalet Austin led the party that struck, in the local history's words, "the first blow struck by a white man's axe" in the township on June 5, 1799, and Austinburg went on to host the first organized Congregational church on the entire Western Reserve, formed October 24, 1801. The township's defining institution became the Ashtabula County Institute of Science and Industry, founded by the Congregational church's leaders in 1831 and renamed Grand River Institute in 1836 after a large gift from Joab Austin; it educated abolitionist Betsy Mix Cowles as its first female principal and John Brown Jr., who enrolled there before helping plan his father's raid on Harpers Ferry. Austinburg was also a station on the Underground Railroad, and survives today as Grand River Academy.

Where the name comes from
Austinburg is named for Judge Eliphalet Austin, who led the township's founding settlement in 1799; it is the only Austinburg Township in Ohio.
Before the town
The 1878 county history records that roughly three or four hundred Native Americans occupied the wider region around the time of the township's 1799 settlement, fishing and hunting along the local waterways, though it does not name a specific nation or in-township village. The same source notes, as an incidental travel detail rather than a local Ashtabula County fact, that one of Judge Austin's daughters picked up an Oneida word while the family's westward journey passed through an Oneida reservation in New York -- illustrating contact along the migration route rather than Native presence in Austinburg itself.

- — Judge Eliphalet Austin's party -- including Roswell Stevens and wife, David Allen, Anson Colt, Samuel Fobes, and the Beckwith family -- makes the township's first clearing.

A conch shell in the woods
Among the hardships the 1878 county history records for Austinburg's first settlers, one stands out for how ordinary and how frightening it must have been: Mrs. Sterling Mills, whose husband had arrived among the roughly fifteen new settlers of 1800, became lost in the surrounding forest and could not find her way back for several hours. With no roads yet cut and the tree cover unbroken for miles, a lost adult in the Western Reserve woods was a real emergency, not an inconvenience -- injury, exposure, and disorientation were genuine dangers, especially as darkness approached. She was eventually located by means of a conch shell, blown as a signal to guide her back toward the settlement, a reminder of how thin the margin was between a founded township and true wilderness in these earliest years, and how much early settlers depended on simple, carryable tools -- a shell, a horn, a bell -- to manage risks a later generation would barely think about.
