How North Kingsville began

North Kingsville grew up along North Ridge Road in Kingsville Township, whose first permanent settler, Captain Walter Fobes, arrived from Norwich, Massachusetts in the fall of 1805; the township itself was organized in 1810 and, by local tradition, ended up named for a transient man named King who offered four gallons of whiskey if residents would adopt his surname over the earlier choice, Fobes Dale. North Kingsville developed as the township's original settlement center, gaining its own frame schoolhouse in 1821, and grew further once the Lake Shore Railroad reached it, which built a large repair shop there that operated until 1876; an interurban trolley line later added to its connections. Its Lake Erie-facing sand barrens and cottages made it a modest resort as well as a farming and rail community.

Before the town

No Native village or site specific to North Kingsville itself is documented in the sources consulted, but the wider township's 1924 history records generally peaceful but sometimes tense relations between early settlers and Native people still present in the area in the early 1800s, including specific remembered incidents (a young man identified as Chief Po-ca-caw, or John Omick, threatening children while sharpening a tomahawk; a man named Armstrong behaving in a hostile manner at settlers' cabins) alongside accounts of violence on both sides. These are township-wide recollections, not tied to a location within North Kingsville specifically.

Timeline

1. fall 1805 — Captain Walter Fobes arrives from Norwich, Massachusetts and becomes the first permanent settler of what becomes Kingsville Township, buying about 500 acres.
2. 1806 — The township's first school opens in Captain Fobes's home, taught by Rebecca Cowles to seven pupils.
3. 1810 — Kingsville Township is organized, with 25 to 30 families in residence; the first town election is held in a log cabin on the Conneaut River's bank.
4. 1821 — The first frame schoolhouse is built in North Kingsville, enrolling nearly 50 scholars including some adult learners.
5. 1876 — The Lake Shore Railroad closes the large repair shop it had established in North Kingsville not long after the line began operating.
6. 1877 — An undenominational church opens in North Kingsville near the railroad depot, offering its pulpit to ministers of any denomination.
7. c. 1910 — North Kingsville residents, feeling shortchanged on school resources within the township and eager to capture Lake Shore Railroad and Nickel Plate Railroad tax revenue passing through the village, pursue their own incorporation, with a dispute over whether Nickel Plate Railroad property would fall inside the new village's limits.

Four gallons of whiskey and a new name

For its first few years, the township that would become North Kingsville's home was known informally as Fobes Dale, honoring Captain Walter Fobes, who had arrived from Massachusetts in 1805 and bought up roughly 500 acres along what became North Ridge Road. That name did not last. According to the 1878 and 1924 county histories, a transient man who happened to be passing through -- surnamed King, and otherwise unrecorded in local memory -- offered residents four gallons of whiskey if they would rename their settlement after him instead. They took the deal, and Kingsville stuck, later giving North Kingsville its own name once the lakeside section of the township grew large enough, with its own railroad depot, schoolhouse, and eventually its own village government, to be known apart from the township's interior. It is a small story, but a telling one for how casually -- and how cheaply -- some Western Reserve place names were actually settled, compared to the careful Connecticut-town namings recorded elsewhere in the county.
