How Ashtabula Township, Ashtabula County began

Ashtabula Township, the only township of that name in Ohio, holds the western part of the city of Ashtabula and the Lake Erie shore that gave the county its harbor. Thomas Hamilton built the area's first cabin in 1801, but the Beckwith family, arriving from Austinburg in 1803, became its first permanent settlers -- a settlement marked by tragedy when George Beckwith froze to death in a snowstorm carrying provisions home, leaving his widow to run a canoe-and-rope ferry across the river for travelers. Colonel Matthew Hubbard, agent for Connecticut land proprietor Nehemiah Hubbard, arrived in 1804 and became the township's best-remembered early leader. By February 1811, 45 families and 259 people had settled the township, which grew through farming, lumber and grain milling, and the Lake Erie shipping trade centered at Ashtabula Harbor.

Settled 1801 (first cabin, Thomas Hamilton); 1803 (first permanent settlers, the Beckwith family); 1804 (Matthew Hubbard), incorporated 1804, by Thomas Hamilton, George and Samuel Beckwith, and Colonel Matthew Hubbard, agent for Connecticut land proprietor Nehemiah Hubbard.

Where the name comes from

The township, like the county, takes its name from a Native word meaning "many fish". Local tradition recorded in the 1878 county history holds that Moses Cleaveland's 1796 survey party briefly tried to rename the river and area "Mary Esther," after Cleaveland's daughter, offering the surveying crew two gallons of wine to adopt it; once the wine ran out, the name reverted to the original Native one.

Before the town

The 1878 county history states that the Ashtabula River historically marked a boundary between Iroquois people to the east and Algonquian-speaking people to the west -- consistent with the county-level account of Whittlesey-culture (Algonquian-associated, per some scholarship) territory to the west of Conneaut and Erie territory to the east. No named village, mound, or treaty event specific to the township itself is documented in the sources consulted.

Timeline

  1. — Thomas Hamilton builds the township's first log cabin, near the mouth of the Ashtabula River on the west side.
  2. — George Beckwith's family arrives from Austinburg and becomes the township's first permanent settlers; George later freezes to death in a snowstorm while returning with provisions, and his widow keeps a canoe-and-rope ferry to help travelers cross the river.
  3. — Colonel Matthew Hubbard, agent for Connecticut land proprietor Nehemiah Hubbard, arrives from Middletown, Connecticut and settles in the township; Samuel Beckwith is also found here by Hubbard, following his brother George's death.
  4. — Joshua Arial arrives and is remembered locally as the first settler within Ashtabula proper; Gideon Leet arrives the same year and serves as postmaster and innkeeper.
  5. — April: Matthew Hubbard, having spent four summers clearing land and building a log house, brings his wife and six-month-old child on horseback over the Indian trail to their new home.
  6. — Elijah Blackman becomes the township's first permanent physician, Rev. J. Badger its first minister, and Ezra Kellogg its first regular lawyer; Amos Fisk operates the Gilman grist mill, the township's first.
  7. — An 1856 tally records 45 families, totaling 259 people, settled in the township.
  8. — By this date the now-incorporated city of Ashtabula within the township counts about 4,500 residents including the Harbor, with Methodist, Episcopal, Baptist, Presbyterian, Congregational, and Roman Catholic churches, Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges, and a public school system under superintendent Prof. J. F. Wilson.

Stories

Two gallons of wine and a name that wouldn't stick

When Moses Cleaveland's Connecticut Land Company survey party passed through in 1796, laying out the Western Reserve township by township, Cleaveland reportedly tried to rename the river and the area around it "Mary Esther," after his own daughter. To get his surveying crew to go along with it, he offered them two gallons of wine as inducement to adopt the new name on their maps and in their talk. The arrangement held only as long as the wine did; once it ran out, the crew and the settlers who followed them went back to calling the place by its old Native name, the one recorded in various spellings as meaning "many fish" -- Ashtabula. The story, preserved in the 1878 county history, is a small, human-scale illustration of how much less durable an imposed name could be than the Native one it was meant to replace, even when backed by the authority of the Reserve's own founder.

The widow's ferry

George Beckwith brought his family from Austinburg to the mouth of the Ashtabula River in 1803, among the township's first permanent settlers. Not long after, he froze to death in a snowstorm while making his way home carrying provisions -- a common enough frontier death, but one that left his widow alone with a young settlement to help sustain. She stayed on rather than returning east, and became locally known for ferrying travelers across the river by canoe and rope when the water ran too high or too fast to ford on foot or horseback -- one of the few concrete stories the 1878 county history preserves about a woman's role in the township's earliest years, and a reminder that the settlers most often named in these accounts, the men who built mills and held office, depended on people like her to keep the roads and river crossings usable at all.
