How Geneva began
Geneva grew from an 1816 withdrawal of settlers from Harpersfield Township who organized their own community and named it for Geneva, New York. The area had already drawn settlers from Connecticut and New York from 1805, and grew through the nineteenth century as a farm-trade town on the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway, reaching Geneva in 1872. Dr. William Hendry planted the city's first commercial vineyard in 1859, launching an industry that made Geneva the heart of Ohio's grape country -- Ashtabula County still grows about 70 percent of the state's grapes -- and the city has celebrated that history each September since 1966 with the Geneva Grape Jamboree. Geneva incorporated as a village in 1866 and a city in 1958. It is also the adopted hometown of Platt Rogers Spencer, who developed the widely taught Spencerian system of cursive handwriting and died in Geneva in 1864.

Stories
The penman of Geneva
Platt Rogers Spencer was six years old in 1806 when his father, a Revolutionary War veteran, died and his family moved to what was still largely unsettled Ashtabula County. Paper was scarce on the frontier, and the boy practiced his passion for fine lettering wherever he could find a surface -- birch bark, leather, patches of snow, even the flyleaves of his mother's Bible. He eventually settled in Geneva and, over the 1820s and 1830s, worked out a flowing, slanted style of cursive writing based on ovals and curves he modeled on water-smoothed beach pebbles. He opened a writing academy in Geneva and, with Victor M. Rice, published his first instructional manual in 1848. The style, formally named Spencerian penmanship, spread through Spencer's own schools and through Bryant & Stratton business colleges his students founded in more than fifty American cities, and by the 1850s it had become the standard handwriting taught in the nation's schools, a position it held into the early twentieth century. Spencer died in Geneva in 1864; the city renamed a school for him in 1937 and dedicated a monument to him in 2012.
